Bethree came up with the next limerick game word, but she must be away. So I'll post it for her. Please PM me your limericks.

However you pronounce it is fine. Here's an example or here. It seems close to "cutter" to me.

How about Qatar? https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/Qatar

That sounds like "cotter," to me, so I used that pronunciation for my limerick. Most of the news sources I've heard pronounce it "cutter." Maybe I can come up with something to rhyme with that. The Arabic pronunciation seems to be closer to "KA tar," with the r being trilled. I know I can't rhyme that.

Oh, thanks for picking this up, tinman!
I was away for a few days & also completely forgot I posted that suggestion.

sattva's 3 pronunciation links were very helpful. I have to admit I haven't heard any news reader pronounce it 'cot-ter as in the MW link I posted. The reporters/anchors I listen to all say 'cut-ter (tho some close the "uh" a bit so it's closer to 'caw-ter). I especially liked the 3rd of sattva's links, where a student of the language explains in detail, & opines that 'cut-ter is the closest approximation for English speakers.

Sometimes, I find it hard to get started, especially like now, when I have too many things on my plate.

Oh, OK, to Kalleh. Working on it.

BTW, just yesterday I heard the NPR reporter announce his headline w/the authentic Arabic pronunciation, then immediately shift to "Cutter" for the rest of the story. Wink

I'm trying! Other than Grizzly Adams' fuzzy friend Hairy Potter, I can't think of any rhymes.

I mentioned this game to a friend in Oregon and he sent me two limericks. I can't seem to convince him to log in here and join in! Frown

I scent one. "Scent" because it stinks.

Wow - I have a lot. Now I just need to get them all posted. Remember, with our new format I'll post and number the limericks and you choose the number of your favorite. Greg, I don't have one from you. Anyone else I've missed?

Alright - I am starting another thread with the limericks. Because some people sent some separately, please forgive me if I miss yours. Just PM me and I'll add it, since we're not using a poll.
