Yes I've received everyone's daffynitions but there's a slight delay due to my inability to use my brain to its full capacity. I'm going to London today and not coming back until Monday so I thought I'd leave all the daffynitions on here this morning for everyone to ponder over while I was away.
Good plan, but... when I e-mailed them all to myself from work (where I have OED online) I forgot to include the real definition! So now I'm at home (where I don't have OED online)... I think you can see where I'm going...
I'm really sorry guys. I'll put everything up on Monday afternoon. You'll just have to select a better wordmaster next time because this one's useless!
Karl, I can't use my brain either, since all the capacitors within it either leak or are shorted, although all the resistors have increased in resistance. Ahhh, getting old...
Although the OED individually contains the most words, there are lots of dictionaries available for free on the Web. Unless brattice is a very rare word, one or more will quite likely include it.
At last, you chorus, here are the options from which you may select an answer:
A - Rye unfit for human consumption but usuable for animals. Also refers to the alcohol made from the grain which frequently leads to blindness
B - A partition for the purpose of ventilation in the shaft of a coal-pit
C - The assembly of keyed cards on a Jacquard loom
D - The top ornamental pattern of a chain link fence
E - The name commonly given to the cord or ribbon used to tie a corset
F - A kind of Italian sausage
G - Bronze lattice used as burglar-proof window covering
H - A rattle used on Scottish grouse moors to startle the birds
I - A device used by the inquisition consisting of a series of iron hoops that were strapped around the torso and gradually tightened by a set of screw fastenings at the rear.
J - An apparatus used for drying clothes that are hand washed
I'll dismiss "A" due to the typo "usuable" but, aside from that, I have to say that I don't think we've ever had such a selection of legitimate-sounding choices.
I'll go with D only because I knew a beautiful young woman in high school named Dee and since I didn't go with Dee then, I'll go with D now.
No, CJ, the "D" was on her brassiere - and her report card. Since I'm inclined towards less ostentationsness and more intellect, I'll opt for "B," since it appears to be two of CJ's "Ds" side-by-side, which is their normal arrangement, but half size.
KHC, I suspect that Karl has experienced some computer problems, so what say we hold Brattice in abeyance for now and pick a new word? When Karl gets back on-line we can finish Brattice.
Ten years ago no one would have known what that meant. Now we all do.
Be careful about the word all, Kalleh. We're not all as hip as you.
I assumed "text" was short for "text message," but I wasn't sure what that meant. I thought it was some type of instant messaging (I did know that one) through the internet. I looked it up and found out it's instant messaging through a cell phone.
Please accept my apologies for the delay in publishing the results A series of technical hitches means that I can't give you the results until Monday - sorry.
However, as a little teaser, I can tell you that the correct answer has been guessed. Now who could it be that managed that I wonder...?
I'm most pleased you've gotten back to us, Karl! As you've no doubt observed, I've posted another word in your absence. Please PM or directly e-mail me (see address above) with you own definition of "dorp!" I'll hold off publishing the daffynitions until Monday pm US west coast time, which should give you plenty of time to not only preside over your word, but participate in mine! Oh, Cat, where's your daffynition? Anyone else for a crack at "dorp?" I've got seven, including the right one so far.
Sorry I'll get round to this eventually (if anyone's still interested by then!) but I'm not checking this site as often as I'd like to be able to at the moment.
The 'who said what and who guessed who' of this round will appear here soon.
