It appears that nobody's going to send a story about the meaning of "overstory, " so here are the daffynitions, plus the real ne:

1. The tallest trees in a forest, also called the canopy.

2. (obs.) Surplus pantry goods

3. A yard light; popular in the 1960s, especially in rural regions of the United States.

4. A plot mechanism that allows the author to allude to a storyline from a previously published book

5. The topmost of several layers of crinoline petticoats.

6. the last or final article in a newpaper or other printed publication

7. The bib overalls worn by itinerant story tellers.

8. A part of the hold of a ship where items of cargo can be stacked on top of each other without danger.

9. Fulsome praise; hyperbole.

10 A penthouse; also the dwelling units in a mixed-use development.

There you be, take your pick! Let's see who told the best story!

OK, even though several others seem as if they should be the real one, I'm going to go with #6.

Well, I really like #1. It's probably not correct, but I am going to choose it anyway.

Since nobody else seems to want to provide a guess, here we go with the results:
quote:

1. The tallest trees in a forest, also called the canopy.
Kalleh, you must be thrilled to have picked the real one! Shout it from the treetops! Of course, arnie and beethree5 picked it too!

2. (obs.) Surplus pantry goods
Bethree5's submission

3. A yard light; popular in the 1960s, especially in rural regions of the United States.
This one was from Kalleh.

4. A plot mechanism that allows the author to allude to a storyline from a previously published book
Caterwaulllllllller submitted this one after she submitted the actual defintion. Smile

5. The topmost of several layers of crinoline petticoats.
Wordmatic's underwear now exposed!

6. the last or final article in a newpaper or other printed publication
Trossl tossed this one in, fooling Wordmatic.

7. The bib overalls worn by itinerant story tellers.
Jerry Thomas wears these, when writing his daffynitions. Big Grin

8. A part of the hold of a ship where items of cargo can be stacked on top of each other without danger.
arnie shipped this one to us.

9. Fulsome praise; hyperbole.
Wordmatic also submitted this one with regard to her petticoats. Big Grin

10 A penthouse; also the dwelling units in a mixed-use development.
I added this one just to fool Jerry. Razz

That's it - who's next?

Great word, and I love your little sidebars. Wink

You are correct, I am ecstatic. I can tell you, it was all guess. I bet bethree and arnie knew it though.

Ahem! My 1958 underwear, that is! My sister and I used to spend a ridiculous amount of time starching those derned things. I can't imagine now that we actually wore them, but everyone did in those days! Poodle skirts and crinolines.

I almost bit on TrossL's offering. In the newspaper business, back in the old days before "cold type," the galleys would come back to the copy desk from the composing room with the "overtype" set on the side. That was the part of the story that wouldn't fit into the space allotted, and we would have to decide where to cut the story so that it would fit.

Shoot... I've been swamped with pre-planning and didn't get to guess. (I would have guessed #10 though.)

I'm sorry, Trossl - I wondered what had happened to you.

Do you perhaps have a new word for us?
