Sorry for the delay. I forgot! I went through so many books before deciding on Anne Tyler's "A Ladder of Years." This isn't as easy as I thought it would be. Many first lines seemed obvious to me, though I suspect they aren't as "obvious" when posted. I am hoping this one won't be! Please send me a PM about what you think the first line of this book could be. Tyler does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of human relationships, and her writing is warm, refreshing, and poignant. Newbies are welcome in this game. Use your creativity. And good luck (well...I also hope that I win! )!

STAT comes from the Latin word statim, meaning "immediately," and it is used in to mean "urgent" or "rush" in doctors' orders. Now, people, how about some more first lines?

Okay...I have submissions from Asa, Jo, CW and Saranita. That's not enough, folks! Pretty please give me a sentence? I will post what I have tomorrow evening.

Sheesh...even Arnie didn't give me a sentence this time. And I put a request out to the wordplay people...not one from them. Perhaps I chose a bad book. Anyway, here is what we have, and I apologize for the dearth of choices. 1. Grandma always says that large raindrops mean that the rain won't last long, but what does she know? 2. This all started on a Saturday morning in May, one of those warm spring days that smell like clean linen. 3. I despise autobiographies, every petty, self-serving, delusional one of them. 4. I left for work that morning without looking back, thinking that when I arrived home it would all look the same. 5. The light refracted a rainbow through the beer bottle, as though it were a stained glass window. 6. The cappucino at Lucia's was always just right: frothy, strong, and dry. I have a personal favorite, and it isn't Tyler's. Please make a choice, Wordcrafters, and you can make a choice whether or not you sent me a sentence. Now, get to it!

I just love the sound of #2... and I've never read Anne Tyler. Sorry

I'll guess it's #3 because it sounds so delightfully curmudgeonly.

I think I will choose #3, although I surely do like the flow of #4. But #3 has my vote.

We need a few more guesses, okay? Where is that Arnie anyway? CW? Saranita?

Well, Saranita, that is what we call a "parsimonious" reply. Okay, let's put this baby to rest. 1. Grandma always says that large raindrops mean that the rain won't last long, but what does she know? Kalleh's; guessed by Bob and CW. 2. This all started on a Saturday morning in May, one of those warm spring days that smell like clean linen. Anne Tyler's, and guessed by KHC. (KHC, if you loved the sound of it, you should read one of her books. It is very typical of Anne Tyler.) 3. I despise autobiographies, every petty, self-serving, delusional one of them.Bob's clever submission; guessed by Asa and Jo. 4. I left for work that morning without looking back, thinking that when I arrived home it would all look the same.CW's submission, which sounds a lot like Tyler; guessed by Saranita. 5. The light refracted a rainbow through the beer bottle, as though it were a stained glass window.Asa's submission, and my personal favorite. This also sounds like Tyler. 6. The cappucino at Lucia's was always just right: frothy, strong, and dry.Jo's great submission, which has me wanting a latte!
