It's a candle holder in the Dean's office, where he has a ten-hour water clock powered by a ten-liter container filled with water from a canal that gets filed every decade by some dizzy church guy with a toothache. Ummmm... I'd think A would be "decane," and if it were K, Poe woulda written, ..."the ten-toneabulation of the bells bells bells bells..." E is utter Trump talk, so I'll guess it's F. That's my final answer.

I'll guess G. | |||

Geoff, I think you are probably right about it being F, but I will choose K, just because it is creative and makes me smile.

Hey hab, what happened to my two amazingly inventive and well-crafted definitions?This message has been edited. Last edited by: BobHale, "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Given that mine are missing I'll have to vote for someone else's. I'll go F "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I read mine and definitely wanted to select it - then remembered it was mine. I think it's between J and L; I'll choose J.

Early Voters should go back and take another look, and perhaps revise their vote. BobHale's entries have been found and cleverly inserted, and deserve your consideration. Mea culpa.

OK, Hab, since Bob thinks it's F and I think it's F, I'll change my vote just so Bob wins - IF I'm right, that is. I'll say it's L, since we've had a few royal bastards in the US of late. (Figuratively, that is)

Mine stays at J. | |||

I am keeping my original choice, too. By the way, I came across a new word today and thought of our daffynition threads. Probably though, some of the men might know the word. Anyway, if people don't mind, I could use it next if no one else wants to do one. What do you think?

Since Bob is gone for a while it might not be a bad idea to get another one going. I don't mind if Sattva does it.

What's DECANAL, did I hear you say? A. DECANAL - pertaining to a saturated ten-carbon hydrocarbon -- by hab; this might even be a valid alternative to the real answer, since there is indeed "decane," the ten-carbon hydrocarbon C10H24. But it's not the right answer, which is what's written in the piece of paper in the upper-right-hand drawer of my desk... -- sniffed at by Geoff B. DECANAL - a clock that measures in tenths of an hour -- by Geoff -- no takers C. DECANAL - a ten-litre container -- by Geoff -- quaffed by Proofreader D. DECANAL - to enervate the root of a tooth (also called a root canal procedure) -- by Geoff -- no takers here either E. DECANAL - de waterway where Venusians travel in gonorrheas -- by Geoff. A little levity goes a long way, even to Italy -- nor here F. DECANAL - of or relating to the Dean or the Dean's office -- the Real McCoy. M-W online and most of the 17 other sources pulled up by Onelook.com say 1: of or relating to a dean or deanery decanal duties 2: of or being the ecclesiastical south side of the choir of a cathedral or church —contrasted with cantorial -- fingered by Geoff at first, and BobHale, and probably sattva too. Also see J below G. DECANAL - a type of candle holder with a narrow opening. -- by Kalleh. -- Guessed by tinman H. DECANAL - an obsolete term for "decade' -- by proof -- nice try, but didn't fool anybody I. DECANAL - a medical operation on the inner ear. -- by proof -- ditto J. DECANAL - a churchman's duty -- pretty close, actually, though you might quibble about part-of-speech or which churchman. Proof again. -- chosen by Kalleh, and then reaffirmed. K. DECANAL - a ten-tone musical scale experimented with by Schönberg, overshadowed by his later use of a twelve tone scale. -- by Geoff -- chosen by sattva 'cause it made her smile. (Best reason ever!) L. DECANAL - A heraldic term referring to a disputed lineage. -- by BobHale. I like this one; it has a ring of authenticity to my ear. I can't believe I didn't post it with the others in a timely fashion... -- Kalleh's second choice, and Geoff's too M. DECANAL - A north African marsupial. -- Bob's again, and also cleverly omitted by me. Strictly by the numbers BobHale a)has the most popularly-acclaimed daffynition and b)cannily selected the desired right answer. Well-done, BobHale, and apologies for my ineptitude. Have a safe journey. Arnie - we missed you; I suspect you know the word anyway. Hope you're doing better; here's to a total recovery soon. Sattva - if you have a candidate - please feel free to present it!This message has been edited. Last edited by: haberdasher,
