Bluffing game: asteism
The next word is

ASTEISM

Send me a PM with your daffynition. I'll post the list towards the end of next week.

...some trouble making the PM function work properly today, but I think I found a workaround. Let me know if definition not received!

Hmmm, I wonder what that PM dysfunction is all about. Let us know, Hab, if it is working again. BTW, I sent you mine, arnie.

Last call for ASTEISM!

I've received nine daffynitions so far (including Hab's). I'll post them tomorrow, so hurry up and send one in by PM if you haven't got around to it yet!

Here are the daffynitions for ASTEISM:
  1. Belief in the teachings of TV Raman, who developed AsTeR, a computing system for reproducing technical documents in audio. Followers, originally called Ramanists, believe that artificial intelligence will eventually become superior to human intelligence.
  2. The obsessive pursuit of success against unconquerable obstacles.
  3. A personality type that is subject to control through karma rather than shame, guilt or taboo.
  4. Genteel irony, polite and ingenious mockery.
  5. Frugality, making do with less, self-denial; admired as a virtue by the Spartans.
  6. A psychological condition in which the sufferer is unable to communicate effectively, his words emerging in a scrambled or garbled stream.
  7. A medical condition resulting from the over-imbibing of cheap carbonated Italian wine.
  8. A star pattern that is not one of the officially recognized constellations.
  9. The visual disturbance one experiences after receiving a blow to the head; seeing stars.
  10. The state of nebulas when new stars are forming. This happens after cosmic chaos... and the new stars are bright blue.
  11. The Greek term for Zoroastrianism.

Let the guessing commence!

Dunno.
I quite like 9.

At the risk of upstaging my many erudite colleagues I cast my vote for FOUR.

Four for me, too, he said asteically.

"Five for me", she said, stargazing the night sky.

I'll jump on the Four bandwagon too, just because it has nothing to do with stars.

Because it's the kind of week I've had, I choose 2.

Let's hear it for unconquerable obstacles!

Well done Jerry and Hab, who both correctly guessed the meaning and fooled two others with their daffynitions!

Any volunteers for the next word?

For some marvelous examples of asteism I would refer you, individually and collectively, to Ernest Bramah's books starting with The Wallet of Kai Lung. Insults are made with such grace and dexterity that the driver was awarded both ears and the tail. Oops, no, sorry, totally mixed metaphor...

Does anyone have a word for the next game? Or, we could leave it for awhile, coming back to it later of course!

OK, I haven't done one for ages. I'll have a go though I might be a bit slow in posting the suggestions.
I'll star a thread right now.
