I sent mine three days ago. Did you receive it, Asa? Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Oh, gee, I am glad it wasn't just my misperception. What a weird word to mean male pattern baldness, and to think I know so many men who have it! WM
|
<Asa Lovejoy> |
Why didn't it appear at the bottom? Gadzooks, I'll NEVER understand this board!!!

Great word, Asa. I wonder how it relates to alopecia, which also means male pattern hair loss.
|
<Asa Lovejoy> |
It was my understanding that alopecia was hair loss as a result of illness. Am I wrong? And is alopecia from Arabic? "Al" is the definite article.
Member |
Well, it can be both. Here is a definition from Onelook that looks fair to me: "Loss of hair (especially on the head); in humans it can result from heredity or hormonal imbalance or certain diseases or drugs and treatments (chemotherapy for cancer)." So, it can just be a hereditary loss of hair (which normal baldness is) or it can be pathologic. It also can be loss of hair in other places on the body or in other animals. The distinction then must be that phalacrosis is much more specific.
