Shu has chosen the place for our next game: Hanoi Please PM me your limericks - and good luck! (I am not going to set a limit on numbers, so go crazy!) Can I assume everyone knows the pronunciation? Ha - NOY

Can't believe Shu picked this place. It's name has occupied 30-100 hours or more of my time over the last few weeks. I teach young kids coding (computer programming) part-time and I have been working on an exercise for teaching them over the last few weeks involving writing code for playing and solving the ancient Tower of Hanoi puzzle. If there are any limericks on that topic I guess you will all know whose it is now. Regards Greg

Tee hee. If there are limericks on the Towers of Hanoi they won't fit the meter: TOW-ers of Ha-NOI

How about Hanoi Hilton? The Hilton hotel in Hanoi Was less than the swanky Savoy T. Rump says its residents Can never be Presidents But I shake my head and say, "OY!" Now where's Arthur Miller when you need a new play? Since there are too many syllables in lines 3 and 4 Shufitz should shoot me.

Then should we create a special category for orthographic-only "rhymes"? "I once spent a week in Hanoi Back when Louis Quatorze was le Roi I was just passing through And came down with a cough Which I gave to Vietnam hoi polloi!" (Like children, they should be seen but not heard.)This message has been edited. Last edited by: haberdasher,

OK. I know I'm as guilty as anyone but can we cool it with the rhyming/ metrical critiques. When it starts scaring people away from the game it's gone to far. This is meant to be a game. As for rhymes for Hanoi - I don't know where they get the "two" figure as, because it is second syllable stress all of the following work boy, coy, joy, koi, Roy, destroy, redeploy and any other "oy" words with final syllable stress. Rhymezone is simply wrong on this one when they assume first syllable stress. This message has been edited. Last edited by: BobHale, "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Oh and Geoff. Your limerick does rhyme. I find it unwise to rely too heavily on Rhymezone. Apologies for critique in the last game. I was more interested in the differences between US and pronunciation than in actually criticising anyone's limerick. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

This isn't my entry. I'll get to that later. “Is it HAN-oi”, he asked, “Or ha-NOI?” “Which version should we then employ?” "The fact of the matter Is it should be the latter Though some use the former, oh boy." "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I have tried to talk Geoff into staying. I don't think I am getting anywhere. This makes me sad! Even though I understand how he feels and I also have felt similar at times, I wish he would stay. Anyone have any suggestions?

Hi Sattva, We almost scared you off with our sometimes fairly technical banter, but you stayed and keep having a crack, which is great (and you keep trying to get better, by asking sensible questions, which of course leads to more technical discussion). Geoff has written some great limericks, and got a few votes in recent times, whereas people like me who think we know what we are doing, haven't managed to pull a single vote for ages. So Geoff please hang around, the game is much more fun when there are more players. Regards Greg

i chose Hanoi to honor a young friend who is currently honeymooning through the Far East. You'd have a much harder rhyme if I'd chosen Angkor Wat or Bangkok! Of course, a limerick pertaining to honeymoon activities would be particularly appropriate. Of coarse.

I wasn't unhappy with your choice, just having been so preoccupied with it for other reasons of late, I couldn't believe that bingo there it was in a limerick game as well. I will get onto coming up with one (or two) soon. Regards Greg

First of all, they do rhyme, at least according to my pronunciation. Your Eastern accent must be getting in the way, Proof. Secondly, can we please refrain from telling others that their choices of words don't rhyme? After all, this is supposed to be fun. Many of us have experienced the not-so-fun times on OEDILF, and I thought we had agreed to simply have fun here. I hate to see people leaving because the board because of the use of fun rhymes/near rhymes/different accent rhymes. I appreciate your indulgence on this.

How about a Hanoi limerick or two? Please? I have zero now. I suppose, in a vote with zero limericks, the identified winner will be easy - all of us! Seriously, please send me your limericks, and if you don't think there is a perfect rhyme (to your ear or accent), send a fun one. We are (or should be) easy here.

Several comments: 1) I apologize if I contributed in any way to any strife or feelings of ill will here. 2) I applaud those that have said we need to have more fun! Thanks! 3) I apologize once again for not getting in any limericks. I have been having a flurry of health issues lately and I am mostly staying off my feet and on my back (which means I am sleeping a lot lol). If I am up for any length of time, I am either holding back a scream, swear words, or popping pain pills, ---not good choices when I can just rest and be okay. 4) I will try to come up with something, but I make no promises. with kind regards, sattva

Well, I did two quick ones, not very polished, but I don't want to spend any more time on them right now. So, they will have to do.

Sattva, you, in now way, have ever caused any strife here. You have been such a bright light to this site. I now have a few limericks. How about a few more?

"Hanoi" and "Savoy" are good enough rhymes for me. I could understand someone objecting to "Savoi" (the French region), but not the hotel chain. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Speaking of Hanoi, the "OY" rhyme reminds my of a little ditty a Scrabble playing friend of mine (she won an Aus Championship) used to use to help her remember all the 3-letter words she could make by putting a single letter in front of the 2-letter word OY. The first letter of every word in the following sentence goes in front of OY to make a 3-letter word: See Coy Boy Flash His Gigantic Joy Toy! Regards Greg

Geoff Submit your limericks the way you want and to hell with the critics. Ignore them.

I have received several limericks by now, including two from an anonymous limericist. And I agree with Tinman, ignore the critics. Sometimes the ones with the most criticism get the most votes.

How? You must know the screen name or else how did they submit them? "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.
