1. a musical instrument, much like an autoharp, that plays simple chords

Caterwauller wasn't instrumental in fooling anyone this time. Frown

2. A bird in the Trionididae family; with white plummage; plump and dove-like, and believed to be similar to the ancestors of modern gulls and terns.

Kalleh feathered friend fooled CW. Smile

3. Botany: Any of several species of epiphytic plants the flowers of which have three stamens.

I tossed this one in just to fool Saranita. Wink

4. An underwater city in a James Blish sci-fi novel of the 50s; engaged in an epic struggle with neighbor Atlantis, to their mutual annihilation.

Haberdasher didn't fool anyone with this one, but was awfully close to the real dafinition.

5. A small salamander.

Arnie slithered into Kaleh's and Hab's mind and fooled 'em both! Big Grin

6. A mythical lake near the Mediterranian coast of Libya.

What's new - arnie and jo knew it!

7. A variety of the phalaenopsis orchid species, named for its unusual sepal structure, originally cultivated in Malaysia.

Saranita's entry sounded soooo nice - and a good bit like mine, too. No takers, though. BTW, who knows the origin or the word, "orchid?" Eek

Saranita, how about taking a turn as the bluffmistress?

Huh?

I didn't even know the answers had been posted! If you are going to edit the original list to show the answers, at least make a post to say you've done that, so it appears in the list of new posts!

Asa, shame on you, fooling me that way! It worked, though. I figured it was much too unlikely that another fake definition so similar to mine would have been coincidentally concocted, which must have been exactly what you thought I'd think! All right, then. I'll take a shot at this, although I suspect a word that I consider obscure is probably in the everyday conversation of most of the people here.

Perhaps we should start a thread, discussing the definition of mad.

Neither was mad, I am sure of that.

You mean it's not a coincidence that the Greek word for testicle is "orchis" ?

I think they're both a little mad, in the sense that they're crazy . . . or did we already crack that nut?

If Caterwauller's "they're" refers to Asa's statement about who he thought was "mad" at him, it looks like Caterwauller means that arnie and saranita are crazy.

We may have to call in a grammarian on this one.

But I know I'm not crazy. Tom Cruise told me so. Big Grin

Well, if Tom Cruise says so - we know it must be true! Being a great actor, he must certainly know more than you and I.

I think you are ALL crazy - so there!

And I can say that because I have 41 years of experience living with a crazy person. I see her in the mirror every now and then.

What about all those people who walk around looking terribly busy and important, while holding one hand to an ear and talking to themselves? I think craziness is communicable!

The phrase about madness being shown by singing choruses in public is from Ruddigore.

As to the other, I guess we're just going from mad to verse...
