Real estate and bankruptcy expert Donald Trump was interviewed on a wide range of subject on Larry King's show. During the questioning, he (among other things) said he believed Arizona was correct to require papers from people on the street, and wouldn't be concerned if he himself were stopped to prove his citizenship (fat chance of that happening!). His Russian-born wife chimed in to say she couldn't understand why the US didn't require everyone to carry "papers."
When asked about Goldman Sachs being at least partially responsible for the economic collapse, Trump defended the institution, saying it was wrong to single them out since "they were only one cog in the ointment."
Does anyone have any other examples of this mangling of phrases?
Unfortunately I can be quite a phrase mangler myself. However, one I hate is when people say they've made a 180 degree turnaround, meaning to reverse the direction. But I'll hear "I've made a 360 degree turnaround." Okay. You're right back where you started then.
