Kalleh said, in this thread that she has dear Shoofie around as a "crutch". What other names do we have for our significant others???

I've often used nasty ones, but also . . .
"old man"
"the boss"
"whathisname"

well?

Ahh, we may have touched upon this earlier here, but Shu and I always sign notes or e-mails to each other as "YRL" or Your Royal Lover. How that ever got started is beyond me, but we love it. Of course no one (except you wordcrafters) knows what we mean.

I affectionately and not oftentimes use a term I read many years ago in a novel by Tobias Smollet: yokemate.

Does that mean rarely? Or, perhaps, seldom?

That is the kind of double negative that gives that subtlety of expression that the English love and that most Americans don't even understand.

Hmm, the connotations of seldom and rarely seem too negative. How about unoften or infrequently? As Richard suggests: there is a difference, and it's a subtle one. Let's say: more often than never, but not so infrequently as seldom or rarely.

Smile Richard, my "What?" wasn't directed at any typo. I was facetiously feigning not to understand what you said.

But of course, that is the kind of tongue in cheek irony that gives that subtlety of expression that Americans love and that most of the English don't even understand. Smile

[Just kidding. I know you were being facetious right back at me.]

Speaking of ironic tongue-in-cheek subtlety, how about that (alleged) C&W song, "Get Your Tongue Outta My Mouth I'm Kissin You GOODBYE." ... ?

Well, Jerry, when you talk about great songs from that genre, I always liked "I'm Gonna Hire a Wino to Decorate Our Home"

A search for that line revealed this:

quote:

1. Her Teeth Was Stained, But Her Heart Was Pure.

2. How Can I Miss You If You Won't Go Away?

3. I Don't Know Whether To Kill Myself Or Go Bowling.

4. I Just Bought A Car From A Guy That Stole My Girl, But The Car Don't Run So I Figure We Got An Even Deal.

5. I Keep Forgettin' I Forgot About You.

6. I Liked You Better Before I Knew You So Well.

7. I Wouldn't Take Her To A Dog Fight, Cause I'm Afraid She'd Win.

8. I'm So Miserable Without You, It's Like Having You Here

9. I've Got Tears In My Ears From Lyin' On My Back and Cryin' Over You

10. If I Had Shot You When I Wanted To, I'd Be Out By Now.

11. Mama Get A Hammer (There's A Fly On Papa's Head).

12. My Head Hurts, My Feet Stink, And I Don't Love You.

13. My Wife Ran Off With My Best Friend, And I Sure Do Miss Him.

14. Please Bypass This Heart.

15. You're The Reason Our Kids Are So Ugly.

16. If the Phone Don't Ring, You'll Know It's Me.

Have you heard Brad Paisley's song "I Gotta Bite" about the woman who said "it's either me, or fishing" and he says "I'm gonna miss her . . ."

great song!

I don't listen to much C&W, but some of it seeps in occassionally.

That's it! I am going to revive the lyrics game we used to play here. Morgan and I really liked it, but we couldn't get too many of you to play.

Yes, I liked that game, too, though I didn't contribute an awful lot. There was qute a range of musical tastes revealed there.

Here's a link to the last reincarnation of the game, including the rules. The rules are not always strictly followed. You notice that one of the stated rules is, "confine the lyrics to four lines or less." The same post contains six lines of lyrics. Some of the others contain more. I agree it's good to limit the lyrics posted, but like to post a link to the complete song.

Here's where we left off. Hurry up and post one. We're waiting.

CW, the links the lyrics game really brings back memories for those of us who have been here awhile. Morgan, who was a co-creator of this board with wordcrafter, had loved the game. You can see her picture on our Community page. She died in the winter of 2004 from cancer, at the young age of 44.

She was an inspiration to many of us.

Is this going to be too painful at the moment? I know it's not been very long since Kim was taken.
