As you know I am a staunch defender of usage trumps everything but everyone has some bête noire that annoys them beyond sensible reason. Watching a video on FB I have just found myself getting irritated by the presenter's repeated pronunciation of "biopic" as BI-OP-IC. For some reason every time I hear it I find I have had an attack of tourettes and shouted "BIO-PIC" at my computer. I have similar reactions to songs containing the word "miracle" but pronouncing it "MI-RICK-UL" and to people who use "enormity" to mean great size instead of great wickedness. I am not the perfect defender of the "usage trumps all" credo, only the almost perfect defender. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson. | ||
