Today is World Autism Awareness Day. I don't intend to sound insensitive, but doesn't "Autism Awareness" sound like an oxymoron? It is just me?

I agree with goofy in that it should be Awareness of Autism Day. I think you are spot on, CW.

I figure folks are upset, but I parse it as a day dedicated to awareness of autism, as does goofy. YMMV.

Folks here won't be upset because our primary interest is words. On the other hand I remember there being a lot of hostility from external sources over at the OEDILF when they got to the limerick defining autism. I'll bet there would be debate about this thread if members of the various Autism pressure groups read it.

Actually I meant that "Autism Awareness" sounds fine to me, because I interpret it as "awareness of autism".

Well, I interpret it as "Awareness of Autism" day, to . . . it just sounded odd to me. I certainly don't want to offend or upset anyone.

Autism = difficulty in communicating, limited social action
Awareness = cognizance, sensibility

It seems to me, if you ignore politically correctness (as you should), that the words linked as they are is a good example of an oxymoron. You'd think whoever thought of it would have noticed.
