The perro de presa canario is a breed of dog found on the Canary Islands. Why is its name redundant?

"canary" is from Spanish "canario" meaning "from the Canary Islands."

"Canary Islands", and "canario" are from Latin Canāriae Īnsulae "island of dogs".

Outside the Cathedral in Las Palmas, the capital of Grand Canary (where I have been for the past week) are statues of dogs to commemorate the fact that the name came from the dogs the original settlers found. I have videoed our guide telling the story and when I play it back I'll check the full facts.
