The perro de presa canario is a breed of dog found on the Canary Islands. Why is its name redundant? Yeah, this is a trick question! ![]()

"canary" is from Spanish "canario" meaning "from the Canary Islands." "Canary Islands", and "canario" are from Latin Canāriae Īnsulae "island of dogs".This message has been edited. Last edited by: goofy,

Outside the Cathedral in Las Palmas, the capital of Grand Canary (where I have been for the past week) are statues of dogs to commemorate the fact that the name came from the dogs the original settlers found. I have videoed our guide telling the story and when I play it back I'll check the full facts. Richard English
