A couple of things from today's lesson on idioms...

When I asked I asked a student what she thought "a wolf in sheep's clothing" means, her answer was "a wolf who likes to cosplay".

And in the same lesson a rather profound answer to a question. Filling in the gap in "they are just _________ tears" one student, instead of "crocodile" suggested "fish" because "when a fish cries no one can see that he is sad".

I think that student is on to something! I like it!

For some reason I am reminded of Angel, a situation comedy TV show about a French war bride in the USA. Angel constantly flummoxed her husband's boss with her fractured English. At one point the boss screamed, "What kind of idiot do you think I am?" Angel innocently replied, "I do not know. What kind?"

I thought the same thing, bethree.

Bob, I answered you on your FB page about the "cosplay" student - I totally get it because of my literalism.

I do love the student's answer about fish tears, though. What a useful word that could be. Many people hide their tears so no one can see.

Suggestions (with suggested meanings) for

"I have _______________ in my stomach."

included

I have an elephant in my stomach. (I have eaten too much.)
I have a wolf in my stomach. (I am very hungry.)
I have worms in my stomach. (I feel sick)
and
I have a bear in my stomach. (I am very angry)

And of course the correct "butterflies".
