My friend, Yarmando(yes, I've told him about this board), was talking today about the wordpwn. I found the Wikipedia article fascinating. I'm a gamer, myself, to some extent, and have not as yet encountered this word.

How do YOU think it should be pronounced?

I'd pronounce it "own" but I've never had to pronounce it, since it's only written.

I have written it a lot.

I've never said it out loud, but I've always thought it might be pronounced as pawn. Kind of the inverse of queen as a verb.

I've heard and used this word hundreds of times, and when it is spelled with a "p", it is always "powned", to rhyme with "owned". Initially, it probably was a typo, especially in first person shooter games, where after fragging an opponent, you want to insult him, but don't have time to correct spelling errors. Eventually, it became slang in its own right, and it acquired its own pronunciation.

The word "pwn" almost never comes up by itself, it is almost always "pwned". Occasionally, "I'm totally pwning you" comes up, and "That was total pwnage", but they are fairly uncommon.

It is interesting to think that the word's origin is from a typo. I hadn't heard of it, nor have I heard of "fragging." I guess that shows my age. Roll Eyes

I'd never heard it either, but I'm not a gamer. How about pronouncing it "poon" as in the Welsh? See cwm.

Frag is actually from military(Marine?) slang going back to around Vietnam.
