What would mast mean in this sentence (in the book I am reading)?

"High on hashish and mast on French wine,..."

Perhaps it's a misspelling of mashed. From the OED Online:
quote:
mashed, adj.
1.c. slang. Drunk. Later also: under the influence of drugs.

Since the word was in italics, I suspect it may be a foreign word. The book takes place in Afghanistan.

Hmmmm... I'm reading Khalid Hosseini's latest right now, but haven't seen it in there, so you must not be reading A Thousand Splendid Suns. I've never seen the word.

It's a state of being intoxicated with God in Sufi philosophy. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mast_%28Sufism%29

Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Oh, thank you, arnie. That's it!

No, Asa, it's not A Thousand Splendid Suns. I read that awhile ago, but I'd never read The Kite Runner, which is where I found the word. Both books, in my opinion, are excellent.

I assume it's related to Hindi masti meaning "fun", often used to describe Bollywood films.
