I recently ran across two citations of colleges which in the past educated teachers as "normal schools." It seems to be an archaism. Has anyone any information about the term?

The term is still widely used in China, though more commonly as "normal University". They are primarily (though not, here at least, solely) aimed at educating future teachers. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

It seems to be the old term for teacher's colleges. Here is a Wikipedia entry for it. Very interesting. Where did you run across them?
