Who or what was "topsy," and how did he, she or it grow?

Off the top of my head ... I believe Topsy was a slave child who, when asked where she came from, said, "I just growed."

One of my favorite childhood stories was, "How Charlie made Topsy Love Him", by Helen Hill and Violet Maxwell. Here is a link to the "Better Homes and Gardens Story Book" (scroll down to the 4th book), with that story, as well as many other wonderful ones. I still have that book (quite tattered!), and I love it!
