My favorite library comic strip made me wonder when the word pimp took on a broader meaning . . . that of sprucing up or improving. I've also seen the word pimp used to mean eccessive advertising. It would seem to be an extension of meaning having something to do with the outrageously flamboyant couture worn by pimps in those '70s blaxploitation flicks. —Ceci n'est pas un seing.

I would put the usage at at least 7 years, which is the earliest I remember for certain hearing of it. It is memorable because it confused by father terribly. I knew what it meant, so it must have been in usage at that point.

We also discussed this here. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
