Remember our discussion on apprenticeships? Well, I got a call yesterday from the Department of Labor, and they are thinking of changing the name. She asked me to discern between "externship" and "internship." Now, when I look them up, "internship" seems to be the most appropriate word for this type of program because it is associated with education. Yet, many of the "extern" definitions work too...and in fact may be better. There seems to be a distinction between an extern living outside the institution (which of course would be the case) and an intern residing within the institution. I can only assume that these distinctions are old-fashioned because "interns" surely don't ever reside within the institution, unless "reside" is being used loosely... such as being a part of the university?

How would you distinguish between the words "intern" and "extern?"
