Can you give me a sentence? I always use it to mean weakened. For example, in medicine some vaccines are made with live, attenuated viruses.

In electrical engineering it means reducing the power or amplitude of a signal.

Incidentally, the way that Pasteur attenuated the rabies virus was by passing it through rabbits. He would infect a rabbit, remove the spinal cord and dry it. The dried cord was ground up, suspended in solution and injected into a new animal. With each pass the virus became weaker until at last it failed to infect the next animal.

Well, technically, I suppose it works. Yet, I'd reword it.
