| In electrical engineering it means reducing the power or amplitude of a signal.
Incidentally, the way that Pasteur attenuated the rabies virus was by passing it through rabbits. He would infect a rabbit, remove the spinal cord and dry it. The dried cord was ground up, suspended in solution and injected into a new animal. With each pass the virus became weaker until at last it failed to infect the next animal. |
