A post in another thread reminded me of a quiz I posted years ago. I thought I'd repeat it here. Even if you saw it then the chances are that you won't remember the answers. Today I bought a copy of the Oxford Dictionary of 20th Century Words. Browsing through it I thought I'd set a new quiz. The rules are simple. All you have to do is guess the decade in which the word or phrase first appeared in print according to the OED archives. Many have earlier oral usage. No looking them up, no researching, just straight guessing based on your own existing knowledge. There are three from each decade in the 20th century. 1. antibiotic 2. astronaut 3. bulldozer 4. chain-store 5. credit card 6. crop circle 7. crossword puzzle 8. double glazing 9. downsize 10. economical with the truth 11. ethnic cleansing 12. false memory syndrome 13. family vlues 14. feel good factor 15. f*** off 16. hovercraft 17. human resources 18. karaoke 19. motorcade 20. nouvelle cuisine 21. organised crime 22. sado-masochism 23. sound bite 24. speed camera 25. superpower 26. tabloid journalism 27. theme park 28. war crime 29. Xerox 30. yellow pages I originally awarded half points for being one decade off but this time round now half points. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I am not good at this sort of thing and will take the risk of looking ignorant. But I'll give it a try. Should I send to you or post here? I have no recollection of the quiz so I'd like the half points, please.

I am sure I didn't because I am not good at these sorts of things, as I said above. And, if I put them here, of course people can see what my answers are. Anyway, here goes: 1. 1920 2. 1940 3. 1930 4. 1960 5. 1960 6. 1930 7. 1920 8. 1950 9. 1970 10. 1980 11. 1970 12. 1980 13. 1950 14. 1970 15. 1970 16. 1980 17. 1940 18. 1960 19. 1940 20. 1970 21. 1920 22. 1910 23. 1980 24. 1990 25. 1960 26. 1980 27. 1950 28. 1940 29. 1960 30. 1920

Well it does say that there are three from each decade though you didn't follow that and you didn't put any down in the first decade (00-09) but your scores are 6 correct and 9 out by just one decade. If you would like to change any answers so that you have some in each decade then you can have a go though remember your score could go down instead of up. I missed that! Nah. I won't do any better. I wish someone else would participate - and if they do, don't copy my answers.

I read through them and didn't know any. I thought they were all from the incunabular period. But, since nobody circulated them, nobody knows.

Well at least you didn't make a fool of yourself, like I did.
