Wow! What quick responses! Arnie's came less than two hours after I posted the word! Then Caterwauller, Jo, and Kalleh chimed in today. Who knows -- maybe one of them is right!

I have to admire your abilities to coin such good definitions on such short notice. I usually can't think of one at all. I was especially impressed at the speed of Arnie's response.

Where're the rest of you? Asa, you can surely leave Sunflower alone long enough to come up with something. Maybe I should rephrase that.

Well, I guess Asa hasn't come up for air long enough to submit a definition, so I'll post what I have.

Quercitron

1. A naturally-occurring, organic, environmentally safe insect repellent.

2. An amusement ride popular in the 1940s.

3. A machine found in penny arcades during the 1930s and 1940s. Users would insert a penny, put their hand on the "question ball" and ask a question. Then they would push the ball downward and a spinner would activate, finally stopping at their "answer".

4. The use of symbols instead of swear words, i.e. #@*!

5. A cucumber-like fruit that has a strong taste of lemons.

6. A yellow dye obtained from the inner bark of the black oak, Quercus velutina (also called quercitron oak); the tree itself; or the bright orange inner bark of the tree.

7. An elementary particle, one of the group of particles collectively known as quarks.

8. A cork-making machine

9. A small glassy body containing no crystals, probably of meteoritic origin.

I totally agree! There was a great folk group from Michigan that played that song on mandolin, fiddle and hammered dulcimer - truly fabulous.

Number six seems to be the most logical, so that is my guess.

Can I guess even though I didn't submit a daffynition (chronic writers' block)? If so, I'll choose 4, because I like it and want it to be this.

And if I'm wrong, is there a word for this? There must be!

Caterwauller has been looking for a word for this. Unfortunately, this isn't it, but Cat thought it was. I guess you'll just have to keep writing those swear words out, CW! Besides, it's jucier that way!

Sunflower said that "number six seems to be the most logical..." Well, she was right, and so were jerry, jo, and, of course, arnie.

Bob Hale must have been thinking of one of the strange quarks, but nobody else was.

8. A cork-making machine
haberdasher submitted this one, but nobody guessed it. It's not so far-fetched, really, since cork comes from the cork oak, Quercus suber.

9. A small glassy body containing no crystals, probably of meteoritic origin.
From our meteorologist, Kalleh. This sounds like a marble from outer space. Nobody bought it.

Four of the ten people who played got the right definition! That's pretty good. I don't think these were just lucky guesses, though. Sunflower, on her very first shot at this game, got it right. Would you, Sunflower, honor us by presenting the next word? Maybe some of your logic will rub off on Asa.

That's what i was thinking. It sounded like an elementary partical name to me and I threw in the bit about quarks for authenticity. I guess everyone here either knows too much or too little about them to have been fooled.
