Never figured where you got that idea from. Do you think that all those times arnie was right he didn't know the answer and was just guessing? Of course now I know that you know the answer but if I you gave your answer I would believe you were bluffing and choose something else. But off course now you know that I would do that you would choose the right answer making my choice wrong. Of course now I know that and... ... and I'm thinking of going into politics.

I have a vague feeling its connected with animals so that gives me a choice of a f or i. As I'm pretty sure Conan-Doyle made up the giant rat of Sumatra I'll go for i.

I just saw DUGONG in a crossword puzzle definition today! (and it's a Monday, which is supposed to be the easiest day...)

Yes. It's a flat-bottomed musical cedar rat that plays jai alai.

Maybe you would have had better luck with byssus. Jo would have claimed to know it.

BTW, you omitted my #4 daffynition. Just as well; it was lame.

My personal vote goer to J.

Bob Hale - you are right in every particular. I guess you do know my methods! I is the correct answer.

I came across it in reading Jules Verne's 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (and just last night saw it again in Dumas' Three Musketeers!).

Geoff abstained, because he knew the correct meaning. His fourth daffynition, which I didn't see, was "Slang term once common in Minnesota for 'Where have you gone?' Possibly from German du wirst gehen." An outstanding example of why my wife says I read too fast. My apologies, Geoff.

I do want to point out that the right answer isn't necessarily the best answer, so that shouldn't preclude voting. Do we want two categories for answers?

No one else voted. The score is 1-1-1.

I would think that, in these limited-activity times, playing on the computer would be a welcome addition to the quickly-exhausted Duties of the Day, but judging by the sparseness of responses lately that's apparently not the case. I'm going to put off posting a next word until either someone else decides to post one (or request one) or until I get too bored to resist. What I've been doing in my spare time that I didn't do BL (Before Lockdown) is read some of the books I never got around to when I was younger. Some of them are quite good, actually. And with a bunch of interesting (new) words, too!

I knew about dugongs from a coffee table book my parents had sixty years ago.

One of the words Hab suggested via PM to me I learned from this book: Harvest: The Hidden Histories of Seven Natural Objects Don't read it - I might want to steal that word! ;p)

Done, on May 14. It is I. YCLIU.

Out of sight ==> not noticed, even it it's been changed.

I think the lesson is that modifying a previous post is often unnoticed - better re-copy it to the bottom of a thread!

Duhhhhh... See "g" above. I was confused because nobody has posted a new word.

I note that bethree 5's daffy and my "c" were similar. So, b35, may I bask in some of your reflected glory? Smile
