Editing a piece for a forthcoming performance, I noticed that Word had put a red line under "aubergine" in the phrase "breakfast consisted of banana and coconut served up with fried aubergine". Checking why it was wrong, I realised that it was because I had the spelling checker set to US English. What was more startling was the suggested correction - "fried aborigine". I have seen that mentioned somewhere else. A very amusing example of the Cupertino effect. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

I find iPhones the worst when it comes to the Cupertino effect. While often helpful (I think because of the touchpad), it can bring up the most ridiculous words!
