falling star . . . pocket

I've got something in my pocket that belongs across my face
I keep it very close at hand in a most convenient place
I bet you couldn't guess it if you guessed a long, long while
So I'll take it out and put it on, it's a great big Brownie smile!

something in my pocket...penny in my pocket

Got an angel on my shoulder
Got a penny in my pocket
And I found four-leaf clover
And I put it in my locket

Wished on all the stars above me
And I caught the nearest rainbow
Gonna find someone to love me
Gonna find someone to love

Well I tossed a lot o' nickels in a wishing well
And saved the fortunes that the fortune cookies tell
I've got a lucky penny and a mustard seed
But a warm and tender love is all I need

And I want a love that lingers
And is stronger through and through
So I'm gonna cross my fingers
That I find a boy to love me true
And I'm gonna love him too

And I'm gonna love him too

Angel on My Shoulder
(Shelly Fabares sang it way back when)

penny in my pocket . . . rocket in my pocket

Boy, boy, crazy boy,
Get cool, boy!
Got a rocket in your pocket,
Keep coolly cool, boy!
Don't get hot,
'Cause man, you got
Some high times ahead.
Take it slow and Daddy-O,
You can live it up and die in bed!

Boy, boy, crazy boy!
Stay loose, boy!
Breeze it, buzz it, easy does it.
Turn off the juice, boy!
Go man, go,
But not like a yo-yo schoolboy.
Just play it cool, boy,
Real cool!

Did anybody else's daddy sing this?

cool...cool

In a town in Sweden by a stream so clear and cool
A boy would sit and fish and dream when he should have been in school.
Now, he couldn't read or write a word but happiness he found
In a little song he heard and here's how it would sound;

Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit,
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit,
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.

Now the Rawlson is a Swedish town, the rillerah is a stream.
The brawla is the boy and girl,
The Hut-Sut is their dream.

Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla, brawla sooit.
Hut-Sut Rawlson on the rillerah and a brawla sooit.

The Hut-Sut Song
Horace Heidt

cool . . . dreams

Fairy tales can come true, it can happen to you
If you’re young at heart
For it’s hard, you will find, to be narrow of mind
If you’re young at heart

You can go to extremes with impossible schemes
You can laugh when your dreams fall apart at the seams
And life gets more exciting with each passing day
And love is either in your heart or on it’s way

Don’t you know that it’s worth every treasure on earth
To be young at heart
For as rich as you are it’s much better by far
To be young at heart

And if you should survive to 105
Look at all you’ll derive out of being alive
Then here is the best part
You have a head start
If you are among the very young at heart

And if you should survive to 105
Look at all you’ll derive out of being alive
Then here is the best part
You have a head start
If you are among the very young at heart

Music by Johnny Richards and lyrics by Carolyn Leigh, 1954 . . . but I like Sinatra's rendition

You can go to extremes...I go to extremes

Call me a joker, call me a fool
Right at this moment I'm totally cool
Clear as a crystal, sharp as a knife
I feel like I'm in the prime of my life
Sometimes it feels like I'm going too fast
I don't know how long this feeling will last
Maybe it's only tonight

Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes
Too high or too low there ain't no in-betweens
And if I stand or I fall
It's all or nothing at all
Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes

Sometimes I'm tired, sometimes I'm shot
Sometimes I don't know how much more I've got
Maybe I'm headed over the hill
Maybe I've set myself up for the kill
Tell me how much do you think you can take
Until the heart in you is starting to break?
Sometimes it feels like it will

Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes
Too high or too low there ain't no in-betweens
You can be sure when I'm gone
I won't be out there too long
Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes

Out of the darkness, into the light
Leaving the scene of the crime
Either I'm wrong or I'm perfectly right every time
Sometimes I lie awake, night after night
Coming apart at the seams
Eager to please, ready to fight
Why do I go to extremes?

And if I stand or I fall
It's all or nothing at all
Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes

No, I don't know why I go to extremes
Too high or too low
There ain't no in-betweens
You can be sure when I'm gone
I won't be out there too long
Darling, I don't know why I go to extremes

I don't know why...I don't know why...
I don't know why...I don't know why...
Out in the dark...into the light...

I Go to Extremes

I go to extremes . . . don't know why

I waited 'til I saw the sun
I don't know why I didn't come
I left you by the house of fun
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

When I saw the break of day
I wished that I could fly away
Instead of kneeling in the sand
Catching teardrops in my hand

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Out across the endless sea
I would die in ecstasy
But I'll be a bag of bones
Driving down the road alone

My heart is drenched in wine
But you'll be on my mind
Forever

Something has to make you run
I don't know why I didn't come
I feel as empty as a drum
I don't know why I didn't come
I don't know why I didn't come

fly away...fly away

Some glad morning when this life is o'er,
I'll fly away
To a home on God's celestial shore,
I'll fly away

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away

When the shadows of this life have gone,
I'll fly away
Like a bird from prison bars has flown,
I'll fly away

Just a few more weary days and then,
I'll fly away
To a land where joy shall never end,
I'll fly away

I'll fly away, Oh Glory
I'll fly away (in the morning)
When I die, Hallelujah, by and by,
I'll fly away

I'll Fly Away

fly away . . . celestial shore

It won't be long,
but it's for sure
Soon I'll be walking
through that special door
There'll be no more cryin'
no more heartache or war
When we all come together
on that celestial shore

When we all come together (3x)
on that celestial shore

Are you tired of walking
on that uphill road?
Are you ready for talkin'
to the one true Lord?
There'll be no denyin'
that he settled the score
When we all come together
on that celestial shore

When we all come together (3x)
on that celestial shore

"Celestial Shore" the only attribution for this I've found is Glenn Kaiser

And I know and I'm sorry, yes, I am,

no more cryin . . . love

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty.
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty.
Yes, I love trash.

I have here a sneaker that's tattered and worn.
It's all full of holes and the laces are torn...
A gift from my mother the day I was born.
I love it because it's trash.

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty.
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty.
Yes, I love trash.

I have here some newspaper thirteen months old.
I've wrapped some fish inside it, it's smelly and old.
But I wouldn't trade it for a big pot o' gold!
I love it because it's trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty.
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty.
Yes, I love trash.

I've a clock that won't work,
And an old telephone.
A broken umbrella, a rusty trombone...
And I am delighted to call them my own!
I love them because they're trash

Oh, I love trash!
Anything dirty or dingy or dusty.
Anything ragged or rotten or rusty.
Yes, I love, I love, I love trash!

Sorry to be longwinded here, but ...

I love trash ... all the garbage
Garbage! by Bill Steele in 1969

Mister Thompson calls the waiter, orders steak and baked potato
Then he leaves the bone and gristle and he never eats the skin
The busboy comes and takes it, with a cough contaminates it
And he puts it in a can with coffee grounds and sardine tins
And the truck comes by on Friday and carts it all away
A thousand trucks just like it are converging on the Bay
Garbage (garbage, garbage, garbage), garbage (garbage, garbage, garbage)
We're filling up the seas with garbage
Garbage (... ... ...), garbage (... ... ...)
What will we do when there's no place left to put / All the garbage?

Mr. Thompson starts his Cadillac and winds it down the freeway track
Leaving friends and neighbors in a hydrocarbon haze
He's joined by lots of smaller cars all sending gases to the stars
There to form a seething cloud that hangs for thirty days
And the sun licks down into it with an ultraviolet tongue
Till it turns to smog and then it settles in our lungs
Garbage (... ... ...), garbage (... ... ...)
We're filling up the sky with garbage
Garbage (... ... ...), garbage (... ... ...)
What will we do, when there's nothing left to breathe / But garbage?

Getting home and taking off his shoes he settles with the evening news
While the kids do homework with the TV in one ear
While Superman for thousandth's time sell talking dolls and conquers crime
They dutifully learn the date of birth of Paul Revere
In the paper there's a piece about the mayor's middle name
And he gets it done in time to watch the all-star bingo game
Garbage (... ... ...), garbage (... ... ...)
We're filling up our minds with garbage
Garbage (... ... ...), garbage (... ... ...)
What will we do when there's nothing left to read
And there's nothing left to need
And there's nothing left to watch / And there's nothing left to touch
And there's nothing left to walk upon / And nothing left to ponder on
And nothing left to see
And nothing left to be but garbage?

Superman...Superman

Sunshine came softly through my window today
Could've tripped out easy, but I've changed my ways
It'll take time, I know it, but in a while
You're gonna be mine and I know it, we'll do it in style
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book, now, baby, that I can find

Everybody's hustlin' just to have a little scene
When I say we'll be cool, I think that you know what I mean
We stood on a beach at sunset, do you remember when?
I know a beach where, baby, it never ends
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
Hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
'Cause I made my mind up you're going to be mine
I'll tell you right now
Any trick in the book, now, baby, that I can find

Superman or Green Lantern ain't got nothin' on me
I can make like a turtle and dive for your pearls in the sea, yep!
A you-you-you can just sit there thinking on your velvet throne
'Bout all the rainbows you can have for your own
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand and slowly blow your little mind
When you've made your mind up forever to be mine
I'll pick up your hand
I'll pick up your hand

Great song, 'nita!

Green Lantern ... being green

It's not that easy bein' green;
Having to spend each day the color of the leaves.
When I think it could be nicer being red, or yellow or gold-
or something much more colorful like that.

It's not easy bein' green.
It seems you blend in with so many other ordinary things.
And people tend to pass you over 'cause you're
not standing out like flashy sparkles in the water-
or stars in the sky.

But green's the color of Spring.
And green can be cool and friendly-like.
And green can be big like an ocean,
or important like a mountain,
or tall like a tree.

When green is all there is to be
It could make you wonder why, but why wonder why?
Wonder, I am green and it'll do fine,
it's beautiful!
And I think it's what I want to be.

being green...beautiful

O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mountain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America! America!
God shed his grace on thee
And crown thy good with brotherhood
From sea to shining sea!

Brotherhood...
All around - sweet brotherhood
No more us and them -
Oneness
No more politics or denominations
Brotherhood
No more war, violence, or pain

in brotherhood ... Brotherhood of Man

Now, you may join the Elks, my friend, / And I may join the Shriners;
And other men may carry cards / As members of the Diners.
Still others wear a golden key / Or small Greek letter pin;
But I have learned there's one great club / That all of us are in.

There is a Brotherhood of Man,
A Benevolent Brotherhood of Man,
A noble tie that binds / All human hearts and minds
Into one Brotherhood of Man.

So, Wally, before you consider firing everybody, remember this:

One man may seem incompetent, / Another not make sense,
While others look like quite a waste / Of company expense.
They need a brother's leadership, / So please don't do them in.
Remember mediocrity / Is not a mortal sin.

They're in the Brotherhood of Man,
Dedicated to giving all we can.
Oh, aren't you proud to be / In that fraternity,
The great big Brotherhood of Man?

(I love that movie!) brotherhood of man . . . hearts . . . lonely heart . . .

Move yourself
You always live your life
Never thinking of the future
Prove yourself
You are the move you make
Take your chances win or loser

See yourself
You are the steps you take
You and you - and that’s the only way

Shake - shake yourself
You’re every move you make
So the story goes

Owner of a lonely heart
Owner of a lonely heart
Much better than - a
Owner of a broken heart
Owner of a lonely heart

Sunday Morning Coming Down

Well I woke up Sunday morning,
With no way to hold my head that didn't hurt.
And the beer I had for breakfast wasn't bad,
So I had one more for dessert.
I fumbled through my closet for my clothes,
And found my cleanest dirty shirt.
An' I washed my face and combed my hair,
An' stumbled down the stairs to meet the day.

I'd smoked my brain the night before,
On cigarettes and songs I'd been pickin'.
But I lit my first and watched a small kid,
Cussin' at a can that he was kicking.
Then I crossed the empty street,
And caught the Sunday smell of someone's fryin' chicken.
And it took me back to somethin',
That I'd lost somehow, somewhere along the way.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
Of the sleepin' city sidewalks:
And Sunday mornin' comin' down.

In the park I saw a daddy,
With a laughin' little girl that he was swingin'.
And I stopped beside a Sunday school,
And listened to the songs that they were singin'.
I headed back for home,
And somewhere far away a lonely bell was ringin',
And it echoed in the canyons,
Like the disappearing dreams of yesterday.

On a Sunday morning sidewalk,
Wishing, Lord, that I was stoned.
'Cause there's something in a Sunday,
Makes a body feel alone.
And there's nothin' short of dyin',
Half as lonesome as the sound,
Of the sleepin' city sidewalks:
And Sunday mornin' comin' down.

Sunday mornin' . . . city

Cause I saddle up my horse
and I ride into the city
I make a lot of noise
Cause the girls
They are so pretty
Riding up and down Broadway
on my old stud Leroy
And the girls say
Save a horse, ride a cowboy.
Everybody says
Save a horse, Ride a cowboy

Well I don't give a dang about nothing
I'm singing and Bling- Blanging
While the girls are drinking
Long necks down!
And I wouldn't trade ol' Leroy
or my Chevrolet for your Escalade
Or your freak parade
I'm the only John Wayne left in this town

And I saddle up my horse
and I ride into the city
I make a lot of noise
Cause the girls
They are so pretty
Riding up and down Broadway
on my old stud Leroy
And the girls say

I don't give a dang...I don't give a damn

Some people say I'm no count
Others say I'm no good
But I'm just a natural born traveling man
Doin' what I think I should, oh Lord
Doin' what I think I should

And I don't give a damn about a greenback dollar
Spend it fast as I can
But a wailing song, a good guitar
The only thing that I understand, poor boy
The only thing that I understand

When I was a little baby
My mama said hey son
Travel where you will and learn to be a man
And sing what must be sung, poor boy
Sing what must be sung

Now that I've grown to be a man
I've traveled here and there
I've learned that a bottle of brandy and a song
The only ones who ever cared, poor boy
The only one's who ever cared

. . . don't give a damn . . .

Everytime you go away
It actually kinda makes my day
Everytime you leave
You slam the door

You pick your words so carefully
You hate to think you're hurting me
You leave me laughing on
The floor

Cause I don't give it up, I don't give a damn
What you say about that
You know I don't give it up, I don't give a damn
What you say about that
You know I'm not gonna cry, about some stupid guy
A guy who thinks he's all that

I thought we were just hanging out
So why'd you kiss me on the mouth
You thought the way you taste
Would get me high

You went to all your friends to brag
Guys are always such a drag
Don't you know the reason that I kissed you was to
Say goodbye

Cause I don't give it up
I don't give a damn what you say about that
You know I don't give it up
I don't give a damn what you say about that
You know I'm not gonna cry about some stupid guy
A guy who thinks he's all that

The Spotted Ass
from the CD "Crocus in the Snow"
written and sung by Stephanie Davis

She was out, she explained, from Manhattan
Had long wanted to visit the West
“Well, ma’am, mighty glad you could make it,”
He said, pulling his Skoal from his vest

They’d both chanced to sit at Gert’s counter
This chic, couth and cultured young lass
And the old packer, Roy, who said, “I’m from Dubois”
“I’m here to show my spotted ass!”

She patted her lips with her napkin
No words came to mind “appropos”
So she sniffed and she coughed, held her eyebrows aloft
And ventured a tentative “Oh?”

“Well, I don’t mean to sound like I’m braggin’,”
He said as he pinched off a chew
“But last year mine won ‘Confirmation’
And placed in ‘Agility,’ too!”

“’Course, it takes time and trainin’,” he added
“That well-muscled look don’t come free
But for balance and workin’ in tandem
Mine’s the pair, ma’am, that you oughta see.”

“Really!” she managed to sputter
While smoothing her hair into place
Her manicured nails drummed her Gucci—
If only she’d thought to pack Mace!

But just then Gert came by with coffee
And said, “I’ll be right with you, hon”
And the New Yorker part of her rallied—
This little exchange was not done!

She inhaled and straightened her shoulders
A street-hardened gleam filled her eyes
Then forcing a smile she leaned toward him
And said in a voice world-wise:

“We’ve clubs in New York for such…hobbies”
“I went once with my friend, Elaine”
“All sizes and shapes pranced before us
In black leather harness and chain”

“We threw dollar bills at our favorites--
Mine being two twins, ‘Chip’ and ‘Dale’
Not many were what you’d call ‘spotted’
In fact, most were really quite—pale.”

“Albinos!” he gasped, “Weren’t you lucky!”
“I’ve only seen one in my life!”
“A cute little thing that could bray on command—
Belonged to the minister’s wife!”

“She was proud of it, too, let me tell you”
“And, much as her husband allowed,
She showed it at fairs and conventions
And afterward posed for the crowd!

“Uncanny!” she answered, “I just read
A story in ‘Cosmo’ on this
It was called ‘The Bare Facts: An Intimate Look
At Today’s Exhibitionist’”

“It interviewed novice and expert--
“Showed scenes from the old Moulin Rouge
“Quoted a noted consultant
“Who said they can grow to be huge!”

“Oh, they’re popular, all right,” he nodded
“I hear Oprah’s got herself a pair
And last year out on the campaign trail
Our governor kissed his fair share!”

“I must say,” she replied, “It’s intriguing”
This ‘subculture’ you belong to
And, I hate to admit, but those spots upon yours are, well,
Something I’d quite like to view!”

“Ma’am, I’d be honored,” he answered
“My trailer is parked just outside
What say you and me postpone breakfast
And I show you one well-spotted hide!”

“Why not,” she said after a short pause
“There can’t be much harm in one glance”
“This could be one exciting vacation
And to think poor Elaine went to France!”

And so out the café they headed
And though no one witnessed a thing
Roy left town that day with a shiner
And his prizewinning ass—in a sling!

“Tourists,” he said to his packer friend Ted,
“That’s one bunch it’s best to let be”
“But should you get tangled with one, for gosh sakes
Don’t breathe a word ‘bout your stud fee!”

“Think of ‘em as a coiled rattler--
Don’t be fooled by their manners and class

While smoothing her hair into place...The way she brushed her hair from her forehead

The Mississippi Delta was shining
Like a National guitar
I am following the river
Down the highway
Through the cradle of the Civil War
I'm going to Graceland
Graceland
In Memphis, Tennessee
I'm going to Graceland
Poor boys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland
My traveling companion is nine years old
He is the child of my first marriage
But I've reason to believe
We both will be received
In Graceland

She comes back to tell me she's gone
As if I didn't know that
As if I didn't know my own bed
As if I'd never noticed
The way she brushed her hair from her forehead
And she said losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody sees the wind blow

I'm going to Graceland
Memphis, Tennessee
I'm going to Graceland
Poor boys and pilgrims with families
And we are going to Graceland

And my traveling companions
Are ghosts and empty sockets
I'm looking at ghosts and empties
But I've reason to believe
We all will be received
In Graceland

There's a girl in New York City
Who calls herself the human trampoline
And sometimes when I'm falling, flying,
Tumbling in turmoil I say
Whoa! So this is what she means
She means we're bouncing into Graceland
And I see losing love
Is like a window in your heart
Everybody sees you're blown apart
Everybody feels the wind blow

In Graceland, in Graceland
I'm going to Graceland
For reasons I cannot explain
There's some part of me wants to see
Graceland
And I may be obliged to defend
Every love, every ending
Or maybe there's no obligations now
Or maybe I've a reason to believe
We all will be received
In Graceland

Graceland

The way she brushed her hair from her forehead . . . Memphis, Tennessee

Long distance information, give me Memphis Tennessee
Help me find the party trying to get in touch with me
She could not leave her number, but i know who placed the call
'cause my uncle took the message and he wrote it on the wall

Help me, information, get in touch with my Marie
She's the only one who'd phone me here from memphis tennessee
Her home is on the south side, high up on a ridge
Just a half a mile from the Mississippi bridge

Help me, information, more than that I cannot add
Only that I miss her and all the fun we had
But we were pulled apart because her mom did not agree
And tore apart our happy home in Memphis Tennessee

I really like James Taylor a lot, so it pains me to have to point out that he didn't write "Memphis": Chuck Berry wrote the words & music in the mid 50s, when James was presumably still a toddler.

OOps! Right - sorry! The lyrics listing I found was from one of Mr. Taylor's albums, though. Shoulda done my research (again)!

Memphis...Memphis

Put on my blue suede shoes
And I boarded the plane
Touched down in the land of the Delta blues
In the middle of a pouring rain

W.C. Handy, won't you look down over me
Cause I've got a first class ticket
And I'm as blue as a boy can be

Walking in Memphis
Walking with my feet ten feet off of Beale
Walking in Memphis
Do I really feel the way I feel

Saw the ghost of Elvis
Down on Union Avenue
Followed him up to the gates of Graceland
And watched him walk right through

Now, security, they did not see him
They just hovered around his tomb
There's a pretty little thing waiting on the king
Down in the jungle room

They've got catfish on the table
They've got gospel in the air
And Reverend Green be glad to see you
When you haven't got a prayer

You've got a prayer in Memphis

Now, Muriel plays the piano
Every Friday at the Hollywood
And they brought me down to see her
And then asked me if I would

Do a little number
So I played with all my might
She said tell me, are you a Christian?
And I said, ma'am I am tonight

Walkin' in Memphis

Memphis . . . Elvis

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
And put on a shirt his mother made and went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
And he shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler,
baby,
Like you never seen

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
How he took it all out of black and white
Grabbed his wand in the other hand and he held on tight
And he shook it like a hurricane
He shook it like to make it break
And he shook it like a holy roller, baby
With his soul at stake

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
He was all alone in a long decline
Thinking how happy John Henry was that he fell down and died
When he shook it and he rang like silver
He shook it and he shine like gold
He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul

He shook it and he beat that steam drill, baby
Well bless my soul, what's wrong with me?

I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
I was thinking that night about Elvis
Day that he died, day that he died
Just a country boy that combed his hair
Put on a shirt his mother made and he went on the air
And he shook it like a chorus girl
He shook it like a Harlem queen
He shook it like a midnight rambler, baby
Like he never seen

black and white...black and white

When I think back
On all the crap I learned in high school
It's a wonder
I can think at all
And though my lack of education
Hasn't hurt me none
I can read the writing on the wall

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take photographs
So mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

If you took all the girls I knew
When I was single
And brought them all together for one night
I know they'd never match
My sweet imagination
And everything looks worse in black and white

Kodachrome
They give us those nice bright colors
They give us the greens of summers
Makes you think all the world's a sunny day, oh yeah
I got a Nikon camera
I love to take photographs
So mama, don't take my Kodachrome away

Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Leave your boy so far from home
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away
Mama don't take my Kodachrome
Mama don't take my Kodachrome away

Kodachrome

Lyrics for Song: Mama Tried

The first thing I remember knowing,
Was a lonesome whistle blowing,
And a young un's dream of growing up to ride;
On a freight train leaving town,
Not knowing where I'm bound,
No-one could change my mind but Mama tried.
One and only rebel child,
From a family, meek and mild:
My Mama seemed to know what lay in store.
Despite all my Sunday learning,
Towards the bad, I kept on turning.
'Til Mama couldn't hold me anymore.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

Instrumental break.

Dear old Daddy, rest his soul,
Left my Mom a heavy load;
She tried so very hard to fill his shoes.
Working hours without rest,
Wanted me to have the best.
She tried to raise me right but I refused.

And I turned twenty-one in prison doing life without parole.
No-one could steer me right but Mama tried, Mama tried.
Mama tried to raise me better, but her pleading, I denied.
That leaves only me to blame 'cos Mama tried.

The first thing I remember knowing...The first thing I remember

The first thing I remember, I was lying in my bed
I couldn't've been no more than one or two
And I remember there's a radio, coming from the room next door
My mother laughed the way some ladies' do

Well, it's late in the evening, and the music's seeping through

The next thing I remember, I am walking down a street
I'm feeling all right, I'm with my boys and with my troops, yeah
Down along the avenue some guys were shootin' pool
And I heard the sound of acapella groups, yeah

Singin' late in the evening, and all the girls out on the stoops

Then I learned to play some lead guitar, I was underage in this funky bar
And I stepped outside to smoke myself a J
When I come back to the room, everybody just seemed to move
And I turned my amp up loud and I began to play

It was late in the evening, and I blew that room away

First thing I remember when you came into my life
I said I wanna get that girl, no matter what I do
Well I guess I've been in love before and once or twice have been on the floor
But I've never loved no-one the way that I love you

..and I love you

And it was late in the evening, and all the music's seeping through

Late in the Evening

first thing I remember . . . late in the evening . . . early in the evening

Early in the evenin’ just about supper time,
Over by the courthouse they’re starting to unwind.
Four kids on the corner trying to bring you up.
Willy picks a tune out and he blows it on the harp.

Chorus:
Down on the corner, out in the street,
Willy and the poorboys are playin’;
Bring a nickel; tap your feet.

Rooster hits the washboard and people just got to smile,
Blinky, thumps the gut bass and solos for a while.
Poorboy twangs the rhythm out on his kalamazoo.
Willy goes into a dance and doubles on kazoo.

Chorus

Chorus

You don’t need a penny just to hang around,
But if you’ve got a nickel, won’t you lay your money down?
Over on the corner there’s a happy noise.
People come from all around to watch the magic boy.

Down on the Corner ~Creedence Clearwater Revival

out in the street ... dancin' in the street

Callin' out around the world, / are you ready for a brand new beat?
Summer's here and the time is right / for dancin' in the street.
Dancin' in Chicago (dancin' in the street)
Down in New Orleans (dancin' in the street)
In New York City
All we need is music, sweet music,
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street
Oh it doesn't matter what you wear, / just as long as you are there.
So come on every guy, grab a girl, / Everywhere, around the world
There'll be dancin', they're dancin' in the street
This is an invitation, across the nation,
A chance for folks to meet.
There'll be laughin' singin', and music swingin'
Dancin' in the street
Philadelphia P.A., Baltimore and D.C now,
Can't forget the Motor City,
All we need is music, sweet music
There'll be music everywhere
There'll be swingin' swayin', and records playin,
Dancin' in the street

Dancin' in the Street, Ivy Jo Hunter, William Stevenson and Marvin Gaye; performed by many

"Dancing In The Dark" (1950s version)

Writer(s): schwartz/dietz

Dancing in the dark ’til the tune ends
We’re dancing in the dark and it soon ends
We’re waltzing in the wonder of why we’re here
Time hurries by, we’re here and we’re gone

Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark

What - though love is old
What - though song is old
Through them we can be young

Hear this heart of mine
Wailin’ all the time
Dear one, tell me that we’re one

Looking for the light of a new love
To brighten up the night, I have you love
And we can face the music together
Dancing in the dark, dancing in the dark
Dancing in the dark

Or Dancing in the Dark by Bruce Springsteen (which is totally different):

I get up in the evening, and I ain’t got nothing to say
I come home in the morning, I go to bed feeling the same way
I ain’t nothing but tired, man I’m just tired and bored with myself
Hey there baby, I could use just a little help

You can’t start a fire, you can’t start a fire without a spark
This gun’s for hire even if we’re just dancing in the dark

Message keeps getting clearer, radio’s on and I’m moving round the place
I check myself out in the mirror I wanna change my clothes my hair my face
Man I ain’t getting nowhere just sitting in a dump like this
There’s something happening somewhere baby I just know that there is

You can’t start a fire...

You sit around getting older there’s a joke here somewhere and it’s on me
I’ll shake this world off my shoulders come baby this laughs on me

Stay on the streets of this town and they’ll be carving you up alright
They say you got to stay hungry hey baby I’m just about starving tonight
I’m dying for some action I’m sick of sitting ’round here trying to write
This book
I need a love reaction come on now baby give me just one look

You can’t start a fire..

I never cared much for moonlit skies
I never wink back at fireflies
But now that the stars are in your eyes
I'm beginning to see the light
I never went in for afterglow
Or candlelight on the mistletoe
But now when you turn the lamp down low
I'm beginning to see the light
Used to ramble through the park
Shadowboxing in the dark
Then you came and caused a spark
That's a four-alarm fire now
I never made love by lantern-shine
I never saw rainbows in my wine
But now that your lips are burning mine
I'm beginning to see the light

in my wine...wine and roses

The days of wine and roses laugh and run away like a child at play
Through a meadow land toward a closing door
A door marked "nevermore" that wasn't there before

The lonely night discloses just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you

(The lonely night discloses) just a passing breeze filled with memories
Of the golden smile that introduced me to
The days of wine and roses and you

for some reason, this was a hard one for me to link to - odd, that . . .

wine and roses . . . breeze . . .

See the curtains hangin' in the window, in the evenin' on a Friday night.
A little light a-shinin' through the window, lets me know everything is alright.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

See the paper layin' in the sidewalk, a little music from the house next door.
So I walked on up to the doorstep, through the screen and across the floor.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Sweet days of summer, the jasmine's in bloom. July is dressed up and playing her tune.
And I come home from a hard day's work, and you're waiting there, not a care in the world.
See the smile a-waitin' in the kitchen, food cookin' and the plates for two.
See the arms that reach out to hold me, in the evening when the day is through.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.
Summer breeze, makes me feel fine, blowing through the jasmine in my mind.

Ours was a lovesong that seemed constant as the moon,
Ending in a strange mournful tune;
And all about me,
They know you have departed without me
And we wonder why,

breeze...breeze

I'm just breezin' along with the breeze,
Trailin' the rails, I'm a roamin' the seas.
Like the birdies that sing in the trees,
Pleasin' to live, livin' to please.

The sky is the only roof I have over my head,
And when I'm weary, mother nature makes me a bed.
I'm just goin' along as I please,
Breezin' along with the breeze.

Last night I said these words to my girl,
I know you never even try, girl,
C'mon...
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you.

You don't need me to show the way, love.
Why do I always have to say "love,"
C'mon...
Please please me, whoa yeah, like I please you.

I don't wanna sound complainin',
But you know there's always rain in my heart (in my heart).
I do all the pleasin' with you, it's so hard to reason
With you, whoah yeah, why do you make me blue.

please . . . show the way

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the starry crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

O sisters let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down,
O sisters let's go down,
Down in the river to pray.

As I went down in the river to pray
Studying about that good old way
And who shall wear the robe and crown
Good Lord, show me the way !

O brothers let's go down,
Let's go down, come on down,
Come on brothers let's go down,
Down in the river to pray.

Down to the River to Pray ~ traditional, recently recorded by Alison Krauss for "O Brother, Where Are Thou?"
Of course, as with much of "traditional" music like this, it is the melody and harmonies that make it such a remarkable song . . .

Down to the River ... River Deep, Mountain High

When I was a little girl, I had a rag doll;
The only doll I ever owned.
Now I love you just the way I loved that rag doll;
But only now, my love has grown.
And it gets stronger in every way.
And it gets deeper, let me say.
And it gets higher day by day.

(Chorus)
And do I love you my oh my?
Yeah, river deep mountain high. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And if I lost you, would I cry?
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby.

When you were a young boy, did you have a puppy;
That always followed you around?
Well I?m gonna be as faithful as that puppy.
No, I?ll never let you down.
?Cause it goes on and on like a river flows.
And it gets bigger baby, and heaven knows
That it gets sweeter baby, as it grows.

(Chorus)
And do I love you my oh my?
Yeah, river deep mountain high. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And if I lost you, would I cry?
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby.

Well I love you baby like the flowers love the spring
And I love you baby like the bluebirds love to sing
And I love you baby like a schoolboy loves his pie
And I love you baby river deep and mountain high

(Chorus)
And do I love you my oh my?
Yeah, river deep mountain high. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
And if I lost you, would I cry?
Oh how I love you baby, baby, baby, baby.

river deep, mountain high . . . . when I was a little girl . . . when I was a little boy

(Ooohh..)

When I was a little boy (when I was just a boy)
And the Devil would call my name (when I was just a boy)
I'd say "Now who do, (who-oo)
Who do you think you're fooling?" (when I was just a boy)
I'm a consecrated boy (when I was just a bo-o-o-y)
I'm a singer in a Sunday choir (oooh)

Oh my mama loves me, she loves me
She get down on her knees and hug me (ahh a-a-ah)
(oh)She loves me like a rock
She rocks me like the rock of ages
And loves me
She love me, love me, love me, love me

When I was grown to be a man (grown to be a man)
And the Devil would call my name (grown to be a man)
I'd say "Now who do, (whooo)
Who do you think you're fooling?" (grown to be a man)
I'm a consummated man (grown to be a ma-a-a-n)
I can snatch a little purity (oooh)

My mama loves me, she loves me
She get down on her knees and hug me (ahh a-a-ah)
(oh)She loves me like a rock
She rocks me like the rock of ages
And loves me
She love me, love me, love me, love me

And if I was the President (was the President)
The minute that Congress called my name (was the President)
I'd say "Now who do, (whooo)
Who do you think you're fooling? (who do you think you're fooling)
I've got the Presidential Seal (was the president)
I'm up on the Presidential Po-o-dium (oooh)

My mama loves me, she loves me
She get down on her knees and hug me
(oh)She loves me like a rock
She rocks me like the rock of ages
And loves me

Fade out:
She love me, love me, love me, love me
(loves me like a rock)

rock of ages...Rock of Ages

Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee;
Let the water and the blood,
From Thy wounded side which flowed,
Be of sin the double cure;
Save from wrath and make me pure.

Not the labors of my hands
Can fulfill Thy law's commands;
Could my zeal no respite know,
Could my tears forever flow,
All for sin could not atone;
Thou must save, and Thou alone.

Nothing in my hand I bring,
Simply to the cross I cling;
Naked, come to Thee for dress;
Helpless, look to Thee for grace;
Foul, I to the fountain fly;
Wash me, Savior, or I die.

While I draw this fleeting breath,
When mine eyes shall close in death,
When I soar to worlds unknown,
See Thee on Thy judgment throne,
Rock of Ages, cleft for me,
Let me hide myself in Thee.

for some reason, this was a hard one to find a link to in my head. Anyway - it's slight, but it's there . . . finally . . .

rock of ages . . . . breath . . . breathe

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?,
I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season"
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

May he turn 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
"Just a Day", he said down to the flask in his fist,
"Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year."
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it.

Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button, boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you only try turning around.

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me,
Threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
and breathe, just breathe
woah breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe.

turning around...turn around

Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit lonely and you're never coming 'round
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit tired of listening to the sound of my tears
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit nervous that the best of all the years have gone by
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit terrified and then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit restless and I dream of something wild
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit helpless and I'm lying like a child in your arms
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit angry and I know I've got to get out and cry
Turn around, every now and then I get a little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
We'll be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause well never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
There's nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

Turn around, bright eyes
Turn around, bright eyes
Turn around, every now and then I know you'll never be the boy you always wanted to be
Turn around, but every now and then I know you'll always be the only boy who wanted me the way that I am
Turn around, every now and then I know there's no one in the universe as magical and wondrous as you
Turn around, every now and then I know there's nothing any better and there's nothing I just wouldn't do
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart
Turn around, bright eyes, every now and then I fall apart

And I need you now tonight
And I need you more than ever
And if you'll only hold me tight
Well be holding on forever
And we'll only be making it right
'Cause we'll never be wrong together
We can take it to the end of the line
Your love is like a shadow on me all the time
I don't know what to do and I'm always in the dark
We're living in a powder keg and giving off sparks
I really need you tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight
Forever's gonna start tonight

Once upon a time I was falling in love
But now I'm only falling apart
Nothing I can do
A total eclipse of the heart
Once upon a time there was light in my life
But now there's only love in the dark
Nothing I can say
A total eclipse of the heart

Total Eclipse of the Heart....of Gold.

I want to live, I want to give
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.
It's these expressions I never give
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.

I've been to Hollywood, I've been to Redwood
I crossed the ocean for a heart of gold
I've been in my mind, it's such a fine line
That keeps me searching for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old
Keeps me searching for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.

Keep me searching for a heart of gold
You keep me searching for a heart of gold
    And I'm getting old.
I've been a miner for a heart of gold.

OF GOLD . . . . getting old

What a drag it is getting old
Kids are different today,
I hear evry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though shes not really ill
Theres a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day

Things are different today,
I hear evry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husbands just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mothers little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old
