There are places I remember all my life
though some have changed
some forever, not for better
some have gone and some remain

All these places had their moments
with lovers and friends I still can recall
some are dead and some are living
in my life I've loved them all

"In My Life"

in my life ... remember

Seems like the other day, my baby went away,
Went away 'cross the sea.
It's been two years or so, since I saw my baby go
And then this letter came to me.

It said that we were through. He'd found somebody new.
Someone help me! Someone help me!
What can I do?

Remember! Walking in the sand.
Remember! Walking hand in hand.
Remember! The night was so exciting.
Remember! His smile was so inviting.
Remember! Then he touched my cheek
Remember! With his fingertips.
Softly, softly we met with a kiss (back-up singers: WAAAAAAAAAAAH!)

"Walking in the Sand"
by the Shangri-Las (Best "girl group" ever!)

I'm not a regular on this thread but I will pop in from time to time. I'm posting here since "In My Life" and "Walking in the Sand" are two absolute favorites of mine.

When I was younger, so much younger than today,
I never needed anybody's help in any way.
But now these days are gone, I'm not so self assured,
Now I find I've changed my mind and opened up the doors.

Try to see it my way,
Do I have to keep on talking till I can't go on?
While you see it your way,
Run the risk of knowing that our love may soon be gone.

We can work it out,
We can work it out.

It's not the way you smile that touched my heart. (sha la la la la)
It's not the way you kiss that tears me apart.

Uh, oh, many, many, many nights go by,
I sit alone at home and I cry over you.
What can I do.
Can't help myself, 'cause baby, it's you.

An aside back to Morgan: Congrats on tackling the challenge proposed by my "Can-Can" post. I knew someone would rise to it!

And while it may not exactly fall into the category of "creative writing," I was rather pleased on how well (if I do say so myself and, of course, I do) the transcription turned out. If you play the "Can-Can" music in your head while reading the text, it's darn near perfect. Of course, if you don't know how the instrumental goes, that whole post was probably pretty much a mystery...

There's only so much I can take
And I just got to let it go
And who knows I might feel better, yeah
If I don't try and I don't hope

What can I do to make you care
What can I say to make you feel this
What can I do to get you there

What'll I do
When you are far away
And I am blue
What'll I do

What'll I do
When I am wondering who
Is kissing you
What'll I do

What'll I do
With just a photograph
To tell my troubles to

When I'm alone
With only dreams of you
That won't come true
What'll I do ????

ten feet tall ... I'd like to be

I'd like to be under the sea
In an octopus' garden in the shade
He'd let us in, knows where we've been
In his octopus' garden in the shade.

We would be warm below the storm
In our little hideaway beneath the waves
Resting our head on the sea bed
In an octopus' garden near a cave.

Where the fire-place burning for my love and me
But I got restless and send my goodbye
Now I’m roaming the hills and I’m searching the sky , for that

A winding and a whirling
A climbing and a twirling
Chimney smoke, why did I roam

The Wayward Wind
sung by Gogi Grant (1956)

Words and Music by Stan Lebowsky and Herb Newman
# 8 song of the 1955-1959 rock era;
# 1 for 8 weeks in 1956

The wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

In a lonely shack by a railroad track
He spent his younger days
And I guess the sound of the outward-bound
Made him a slave to his wand'rin ways

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

brief instrumental interlude

Oh I met him there in a border town
He vowed we'd never part
Though he tried his best to settle down
I'm now alone with a broken heart

And the wayward wind is a restless wind
A restless wind that yearns to wander
And he was born the next of kin
The next of kin to the wayward wind

The next of kin to the wayward wind

I've searched for you ... take my hand

This land is mine, God gave this land to me
This brave and ancient land to me
And when the morning sun reveals her hills and plain
Then I see a land where children can run free

So take my hand and walk this land with me
And walk this lovely land with me
Though I am just a man, when you are by my side
With the help of God, I know I can be strong.

Oh Shufitz! That is one of my most favorite songs in the world. I sang this for all auditions in high school. It has a beautiful melody, has such a range, and requires a very strong voice to sing it. For those who are not familiar with the music, here is a very good midi version of it. Enjoy it as much as I am! And thank you Shu!

take my hand ... This land is mine

[Regarding the "Land of Milk and Honey"]

The honey's kind of bitter and the milk's a little sour.
Did you know the "pebble" is the state's official flower?
How about the tension?
Political dissentions?
And no one ever mentions,
But the scenery is barren,
and torrid
and arid
and horrid,
AND
How about the border when the Syrians attack?
How about the Arab with the rifle in your back?
How about the water: what there is of it is brine
but
This lovely land is mine.

From the musical Milk and Honey, as remembered.

This is an aside and not part of the game. However, with all the "this land is mine" talk, I just had to link to this song, one of my favorites:

THIS LAND IS YOUR LAND

Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

The Night Chicago Died

The Night Chicago Died
Paper Lace (1974)

Daddy was a cop
On the East Side of Chicago
Back in the USA
Back in the bad old days

In the heat of a summer night
In the land of the dollar bill
When the town of Chicago died
And they talk about it still

When a man named Al Capone
Tried to make that town his own
And he called his gang to war
Against the forces of the law

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night it really was
Brother, what a fight it really was
Glory be

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night the people saw
Brother, what a fight the people saw
Yes, indeed

And the sound of the battle rang
Through the streets of the old East Side
'Til the last of the hoodlum gang
Had surrendered up or died

There was shouting in the street
And the sound of running feet
And I asked someone who said
'Bout a hundred cops are dead

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night it really was
Brother, what a fight it really was
Glory be

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night the people saw
Brother, what a fight the people saw
Yes, indeed

Then there was no sound at all
But the clock up on the wall
Then the door burst open wide
And my daddy stepped inside
And he kissed my momma's face
Then brushed her tears away

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night it really was
Brother, what a fight it really was
Glory be

I heard my momma cry
I heard her pray the night Chicago died
Brother, what a night the people saw
Brother, what a fight the people saw
Yes, indeed

The night Chicago died
The night Chicago died
Brother, what a night it really was
Brother, what a fight it really was
Glory be

The night Chicago died
The night Chicago died

We barely touch, we hardly say "Goodnight".
And how could she have known? She's only five.
I tucked her in, warm and safe.
'Bout to close her door and walk away,
Then my heart stopped when I heard her pray:

"I promise, honest, I'll be good.
"Just one wish, God, if you would:
"Bring back their happy faces;
"Just make them kiss and make up;
"Please keep Mom and Dad in love."

Teddy Bear's Picnic

Picnic time for teddy bears
The little teddy bears are
Having a lovely time today
Watch them, catch them unawares
And see them picnic on their holiday
See them gaily gather 'bout
They love to play and shout
They never have any cares
At six o'clock their mommies and daddies
Will take them home to bed
Because they're tired little teddy bears.

San Antonio Rose

written and sung by Bob Wills (1940)

Deep within my heart lies a melody,
A song of old San An - tone.
Where in dreams I live with a memory,
Beneath the stars all alone.

It was there I found beside the Alamo
Enchantment strange as the blue up above.
A moonlit pass only she would know,
Still hears my broken song of love.

Moon in all your splendor, know only my heart
Call back my Rose, Rose of San Antone.
Lips so sweet and tender, like petals falling apart.
Speak once a - gain of my love, my own.

Broken song, empty words I know
still live in my heart all a - lone
For that moonlit pass by the Alamo,
and Rose, my Rose of San Antone.

The prairie sky - is wide and high
Deep in the heart of Texas.
The Sage in bloom - is like perfume

In the town where I was born

So we sailed up to the sun

Around her neck
She wore a yellow ribbon,
She wore it in the springtime
And in the month of May.
And if you asked her
Why the heck she wore it,
She'd say "It's for my lover
Who is far, far away".

Refrain:
Far away!
Far away!
She wore it for her lover far away.
Around her neck she wore a yellow ribbon.
She wore it for her lover who is far, far away.

Around the block she pushed a baby carriage. . .

Around her thigh she wore a yellow garter. . .

Behind the door her daddy kept his shotgun. . .

And in the church the preacher kept a license. . .

TEACH YOUR CHILDREN
Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young
by Graham Nash

You who are on the road
Must have a code that you can live by
And so become yourself
Because the past is just a good bye.
Teach your children well,
Their father's hell did slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.
And you, of tender years,
Can't know the fears that your elders grew by,
And so please help them with your youth,
They seek the truth before they can die.
Teach your parents well,
Their children's hell will slowly go by,
And feed them on your dreams
The one they picks, the one you'll know by.
Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you will cry,
So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.

[I love this one, so I am posting the whole song.]

I hate to answer myself, but here is my tribute of one of my very favorites...Barry White. His romantic and sensuous singing will be sorely missed.

Can't Get Enough of Your Love, Babe
~ Barry White
(spoken)
I've heard people say that
Too much of anything is not good for you, baby
Oh no
But I don't know about that
There's many times that we've loved
We've shared love and made love
It doesn't seem to me like it's enough
There's just not enough of it
There's just not enough
Oh oh, babe

(sung)
My darling, I can't get enough of your love babe
Girl, I don't know, I don't know why
Can't get enough of your love babe
Oh, some things I can't get used to
No matter how I try
Just like the more you give, the more I want
And baby, that's no lie
Oh no, babe

It feels so good
You lying here next to me
Oh, what a groove
You have no idea how it feels
My hands just won’t keep still
I love you, baby
Oh, I love you, I love you, I love you
I just wanna hold you
Run my fingers through your hair
Ooh
Outta sight
Uh-huh, right there, you like it like that
Closer
Come here, closer, close
Oh, baby
Oh, baby

Good... Gotta

Now little girl, you're so young and pretty
but one thing I know is true,
You'll be dead before your time, you know it..

See my daddy in bed, he's dyin'
See his hair been turnin grey
He's been working and slaving his life away.

We gotta' get out of this place
If it's the last thing we ever do
We gotta' get out of this place-
Girl, there's a better life for me and you...

"We gotta get out of this place" (This was an Animals song I belive, but I like the Blue Oyster Cult version better.)

Love that song, Jim! Big Grin

Here is one from the other end of the continuum:

The Old Gray Mare
~adapted spiritual
~author unknown

The old gray mare,
She ain't what she used to be
Ain't what she used to be,
Ain't what she used to be
The old gray mare,
She ain't what she used to be
Many long years ago

Having just had a birthday, I hope Shufitz doesn't think this of me! Eek
