Hokay... so here is the list!

1. Pogonotrophy: Coming fourth in a punk rock dancing competition.

2. Having a tropism for sucrose solutions.

3. A shift in local customs as a result of in-migration from culturally distinct neighboring regions.

4. The care and feeding of beards.

5. Losing the ability to bounce.

6. To deteriorate due to lack of intellectual stimulation.

7. Attraction to jumping.

8. pogonotrophy: I can't believe Walt Kelly didn't get the award!!

9. Award presented at the annual convention of pogono practioners for excellence in that art.

10. Eating extraordinary amounts of food.

11. The decline and ultimate extinction of the Pogons, a small indigenous tribe in Brazil, S. America.

I'll guess # 10, although, being fuzzy-faced, I do like # 4.

This one is hard...I will choose number 3, though I love 5. If there isn't a word for losing the ability to bounce, there should be! Smile

I'd like to nominate this word for a special award as the one that has attracted the largest number ever of punning answers.

So much as I'd like to go with 1, 5(I especially like 5), 7, 8(which looks as if it's meant to be humourous though I have no idea who Walt Kelly is), 9 or 11 I think I'll try 2 as it doesn't look even mildly funny.

I love the answers!

I'll go for six, even though I want it to be 1 and I feel there's a pun in the first bit I'm not picking up on.

I guess I'll vote for #10, though I'm not sure why. . . so many great choices!

I'll go for 3. A difficult choice, though!

POGONOTROPHY - a meta-analylsis

A few comments on the possible origins of the entries:

1,8, and 9 all exploit the "no trophy" parsing of the word.

6 and 8 both allude to Walt Kelly's character Pogo Possum; Kelly was witty and often very subtle in providing intellectual stimulaton.

5 and 7 seized on the pogo-stick association.

2,and 3 took the attraction part of the word - trophy, tropism. 11 took the opposite approach (atrophy).

If you adopt the policy that any daffynition that shares characteristics with other(s) is a red herring and should be discarded, that only leaves 4 and 10...

Arnie's choice is 3. No help there.

I think I'll abstain for this round. ;-)

I'm sure "pogonophobia" is fear of beards, so I'd have guessed at "pogonotrophy" being a variant of alopecia, in which the sad sufferer see their facial hair gradually waste away. Since that's not on the list, I'll guess at No.4...

Well then... since the correct definition has been pretty much given away, here are the results.

1. Pogonotrophy: Coming fourth in a punk rock dancing competition. (Whose was this? My notes don't indicate. blush...)

2. Having a tropism for sucrose solutions. My own daffynition.
Guessed by Bob Hale

3. A shift in local customs as a result of in-migration from culturally distinct neighboring regions. Asa

Guessed by Kalleh, Arnie

4. The care and feeding of beards. The correct answer. See http://www.atlaspress.co.uk/theLIP/index.cgi?action=chap for an amusing look at the topic.

Way to go, Jerry and Quickbeam for figuring out the correct answer.

5. Losing the ability to bounce. Arnie

6. To deteriorate due to lack of intellectual stimulation. Caterwauller
Guessed by Cat -- One cat fooled another?

7. Attraction to jumping. Haberdasher

8. pogonotrophy: I can't believe Walt Kelly didn't get the award!! ..and Haberdasher. (funny)

9. Award presented at the annual convention of pogono practioners for excellence in that art. Jerry Thomas

10. Eating extraordinary amounts of food. Kalleh: Hands down the winner for bluffing the most number of people!!

Guessed by Asa, caterwauller, Sunflower

11. The decline and ultimate extinction of the Pogons, a small indigenous tribe in Brazil, S. America. Sunflower

Can anyone describe to me the beard feeding process? Does one have to take precautions?

OMG! That's the second time I've fooled Cat! I think we think alike!

I won't comment on the feeding of beards - lol - not in mixed company, anyway. Wink

Quickbeam, we'd love to have you play the next game. Asa is the host with the word "shiltron," and you can either PM Asa Lovejoy or send an e-mail to ama11285@hevanet.com. Hope to see you! Big Grin
