The SAT exams are taking out anologies. Here is an analogy question by a writer who disagrees with that move:
A talent for analagies is to intelligence as:
A. Fresh hamburger meat is to a bridal registry
B. A working umbrella is to a tsunami
C. A good short game is to a low handicap
D. A liquid trust fund is to zero-coupon bonds

It is evidently obvious to golf-lovers that "C" is correct. His explanation was that a talent for seeing and discovering analogies is a key component of intelligence, just as chipping and putting accurately are key components of consistently good golf scores. He sees (and I agree) making analogies as an important part of intelligence because you are finding patterns and making connections and associations.

How about a thread of analogies then?

I will start with an analogy about analogies (written in the same article): A day without an analogy is like a day without a Snickers bar. (note to self: it has been far too long since you've had a Snickers bar!)

One of my own: My knowledge of computers is like a surgeon's knowledge of communication! (Remember, I am a nurse! Razz)

I can't help but be reminded of an old Steve Martin line that I've always loved:

"Remember, a day without sunshine is like....NIGHT!"

There has been a tangible lack of Texans in this community, WinterBranch. We welcome you here.

My hippy-style son and his wife named their first child -- my first grandchild -- Rain.

She was born in Key West during a storm.

You guessed it .... "A day without Rain is like a day without sunshine."

"A woman without a man is like a fish without a bicycle."

I think we've covered this one somewhere else. It's a feminist slogan used primarily by lesbians.

A man without a woman
is like a ship without a sail,
Like a boat without a rudder,
a kite without a tail.
A man without a woman
is like a wreck upon the sand,
And if there's one thing worse, in this universe,
It's a woman, I said, a woman,
it's a woman without a man!
