Let’s try ERIE . City, lake, whichever you like. Not Eerie, not aerie, not airy, not even Lackawanna, just Erie. This message has been edited. Last edited by: haberdasher,

as a foreigner to your fair shores let me just check that we do in fact pronounce it the same way EE-ree. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.
|
Member |
That's how I pronounce it, too.

I'm trying to write one, but having no success thus far. I keep thinking about Poe's "The Raven" for some reason. "As I pondered weak in Erie, came no limerick, mean and sneery..." Ah, well, I'll keep trying.

sent a couple "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Also... maybe change the thread title... it's not at all clear that this is a Limerick game thread "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.
|
Member |
Sent one, but I couldn't come up with anything good, unfortunately.

Bob - can one change the title of an active thread? I haven’t found a way to do so.
|
Member |
Easy. The topic starter just edits the first post and the topic title is editable. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Why, so it is! Thank you. Done.

My turn to grovel and plead. We need entries for Erie, the limerick. A new daffynition: PAUCITY: amount of participation in limericks incorporating ERIE.

Pau is a city in France. If it has few inhabitants, it's Paucity. I'll try to come up with another Limerick, but so far no luck.
|
Member |
I have added one to my previous PM. Hold your nose.
|
Member |
How can I pass up a grovel a plead from that sweet Hab? I never send more than one, but I did this time.
|
Member |
And here I thought PAUCITY was inhabited solely by canids and felines...
|
Member |
That's true if they are few in number, resulting in the city's being overrun by plague-ridden chickens.

I have a total of seven now. Any more coming? Going once, going twice...

Please post the limericks. I'll choose several.

Any objections? Hearing none, we'll proceed. ----------------------------------- 1. We once took a trip to Lake Erie, In Cleveland - which really is dreary. The Lake is more cheery, We fished, but were leery, Cuz the air made us bleary and teary. 2. A lovely young woman of Erie Won't have another male dearie She avers and exclaims That they've all got bad aims And mopping their messes is dreary 3. The problem with people in Erie Is they're so seldom chatty or cheery They will often play dumb And prefer to keep mum When faced with the most simple query. 4. I once met a dearie in Erie, Her sweetness just made me so cheery! But then she met Jim, And was all over him. It made me so sad - I was teary. 5. As I walked on the shores of Lake Erie Feeling worn out and tired and quite weary A young woman I met Said "I can cheer you up yet, For two dollars an hour, thank you dearie." 6. (A Great Story) A guy with a house on Lake Erie-o Was told "Huron to something Superio'. Most folks find the fishing is Better than Michigan. No need to go to Ontario." 7. A crazy old fellow of Erie With features like old Wallace Beery Would rave and would prate 'Bout the world and its fate Jeremiah? Or Timothy Leary? ------------------------------ Th-th-th-th-that's All, Folks. What's your pleasure?

Well, heck, it probably doesn't follow our strict protocol (and you know HOW important strict protocols are!), but I can't pass up #7. Very clever!

2 "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I like both 2 and seven also, but shall pick #3 for no good reason other than to spread the votes around.

You've entered your second childhood, and are now watching Porky Pig cartoons? I see they're back on. Geoff, who's been watching a wascally wabbit out the window

As Moderator for this round I don't have a vote, but I did get a smile on my face from 5 and from 2. Anyone else with any comments? B35? Maybe Shu wouldn't mind sharing his thoughts even if he didn't want to compose an entry?

Four participants is just not enough! Go look at AWAD, where they get four DOZEN limericks written on each daily word! It's just not fun here anymore.
|
Member |
You are sending our people to AWAD? Oh. My. I never thought I'd see the day. I am glad they are so verbose over there. Sorry you feel that way, Geoff. You can vote, Hab!
|
Member |
I'm not sending anyone anywhere, just stating facts. I don't participate in AWAD; I just read their daily word. I'm sorry if I have offended you, Kalleh. I'm just sooooo frustrated.
|
Member |
I hate to admit it, Geoff, but you have a good point. And I bear the responsibility. Mea culpa. Mea maximum culpa. I take your comments not as complaining, but rather as exhorting and encouraging us to do better. In that spirit, my first baby step is this limerick: A Niponese fellow in Erie Has become so depressed that I hear he Has already tried To commit suicide, Or as Japanese say, hara-kiri.

Great! Thanks, Shu! Had you gotten it in before Hab posted them I'd have chosen it in a heartbeat. If I had the computer smarts to help with word gathering and posting I'd be happy to do so, but I just don't understand all this digital stuff. I still think digits are fingers! And I think the parts of fingers called phalanges are followers of Francisco Franco, so named because they gave the finger to democracy. So you see, I'm pretty damned useless.

Not at all. You have been one of our loyalists. I was just surprised. I haven't been back to AWAD in what seems like centuries. Like Shu, I bear responsibility too. I haven't been around as much as I used to be. It's not because of FB or anything, but perhaps because slowness begets slowness. I'll try to improve. I'd love to see a few oldtimers back, like Richard or Tinman. I'd have chosen Shu's too!

Since Shu's got two votes, he's in the lead.
|

Yep. I'll see if he's game.

Had you all seen my assays at “Erie,” Yiz’d said, oh the poor sweet old dearie: There was spark, now there’s yawn Sense of meter’s quite gone Yes, dementia’s set in we do fear-ie.

You aren't the only one! I'm having a negative reaction to my second C-19 shot. Foggy brain, aches all over, etc. And I was a bit demented already! Ohhhh...
|
Member |
Interesting. My reaction to getting the second shot was the opposite: slept deeply that evening, didn't get up until 9AM the next day and felt only OK, but since then have felt brighter and more energetic and thinking faster and more clearly. (That is to say, my bridge game is better.) It's as though something immunologic was inihibiting my CNS and now the balance between stimulation and suppression favors interruption of some not-so-good process. Tricky things, those B-cells and T-cells. Of course it's a little fast for that mechanism. Maybe I've just been a little depressed and now that's been relieved? Tricky things, those placebos.

BTW - anyone else want to vote on the limericks? If not I'll post the authors. Whatever you've been feeling, B35, you do seem to have shaken it. Nothing wrong with the one you just showed us.

Interesting , after my post two above, to read this today. (Washington Post article). As far as I know I'm not a Long Hauler, but I've never been PCR-tested. As I said - tricky things these T-cells, B-cells...and placebos.

Very interesting, Hab. I have heard that the Moderna vaccine has more side effects than Pfizer's. Shu and I only had sore arms.
|

I spent the last week with flu-like symptoms. Delayed aftereffect, or did I really have the flu? Still feeling more fog-brained than usual, and tired. Yuck! I had the Pfizer vaccine.
