A friend sent me one of those puzzles where you find the words hidden in a letter-square, running horizontally, vertically or diagonally. The twist on this one is that the is no a, e, i, o, or u in the square.

He says there are at least 40 words of 3 letters or more, and and I bet this group can find more that those 40! Make me proud, ladies and gents! You can copy this grid, and italicize each new word you, and we can keep a running alphabetical list to avoid duplicates.

P.S. dictionary.com will be the judge of "what is a word".

also - so we allow wholly-contained subsets?

dryly holds dry
tryst holds try
crypts holds crypt and cry

You get the point. In wordsearchland I don't think complete overlaps are viewed with approval, but for our count
I don't see why they shouldn't be included.

cry, crypt, crypts, dry, dryly, fly, fry, glyph, gyp, hymn, lynch, myrrh, myth, ply, pry, psych, shy, sty, sylph, sync, thy, try (twice), tryst

P.S. There's another "shy" crossing the bold one, NW-->SE, and the original one can go on to "shyly".

It comes from running down in your head - what words have no vowels but Y? So with that thought in mind - look for "cyst," "spry(ly)," etc. And just in case the writer of that puzzle was being Puckish, look for "cwm" too.

You've got me looking for LY combos to add to other words. Here's SPRYLY, containing SPRYLY, plus a second THY; we already have two appearances of "shy" (thanks to hab) and of "try".

The list (*= extra appearance):
cry, crypt, crypts, dry, dryly, fly, fry, glyph, gyp, hymn, lynch, lynx, myrrh, myth, ply, pry, psych, shy*, shyly, spry, spryly, sty, sylph, syzygy, sync, thy*, try*, tryst

LYNX was a beaut, too!

If I put too much thyme in my bouillabaisse, is it THYMY ? Actually, Dictionary.com says yes. Still, it sounds rather forced.

But I'm not sure we can accept d.c uncritically. It has a listing for SYLK as "acronym for 'symbolic link'" but I don't think that makes it a valid entry here.

As to the Welsh words with no English vowels whatsoever (like CWM) I give up. I'm sure there is a small handful of them and will leave the search to others.

Hab, agreed that acronyms don't count.

How can we have missed GYM running left-to-right, like an ordinary word, in the top row?

Also, there's a second STY, starting with the same S as the STY we've already found (5th row, 2nd-to-last column) but running up rather than running southwest.

Nope; gave you the only one I know. I meant it when I said I'd have to leave that department to others. But I do think I recognize yours, dredged from the dark depths of memory.

And I don't think it's in any way accidental that both of these are in the grid, either! So if there _are_ more, don't be surprised Smile
