Two towns near me are Greenwich and Woolwich. They are pronounced 'GRIN idge' and 'WOOL idge', although I have heard them pronounced with an 'itch' by some people. Would the former way be acceptable to you? Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Given that I still have only one, I'd bet against you. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Well, we've now reached the dizzy heights of two. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I almost had one last night, but my few functioning synapses sinned in the apses and were excommunicated from my brain. I'll keep trying sans synapses.

It took me forever with mine - and then I still can't get the last line right. However, it sounds like the competition isn't staggering, at least.

Staggering? More like falling over and lying in the gutter. ![]() "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Still struggling, but then I've been driving across the country while ill, so will try once I feel better.

It is awful to have to drive long distances while being ill. So sorry. We'll be patient.

I knew there was another Pronunciation Guide lurking, gnawing at my subconscious - Consider: "...you dream you are crossing The channel and tossing About in a steamer from Harwich - Which is something between A large bathing machine And a very small second-class carriage"...

Oh, thanks, Hab. Now I've added nausea to my symptoms... ![]()

Garage will work as a rhyme too, in some English dialects, as will Marriage, etc. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.
|
Member |
Yes. Except that we're dealing with a generic "-wich" rather than "Harwich." It may take some creative wordplay to find strong rhymes with Bromwich; peerage or leakage or porridge don't quite cut it.

Nice way to put it. ![]()
