While looking into something else, I made the pleasant discovery that astonish, astound, and stun are all (via French) from Vulgar Latin *extono, extonare, 'to thunder (away)'. Astound was originally the past participle of estonen, estonede.

I know this is a joke, but my mother's maiden name is a word in Estonian. And my grandmother's favorite Genoese phrase was a trōn dō Diō / literally, 'to the thunder of God', but meaning at the antipodes of here.
