The OED folks have published a list of terms for which they're seeking further verification or antedating. On checking a few, I find that good antedates can be found simply from Googles News-Archive, selecting appropriate dates. Let's help the OED folks by checking through these and giving them some good cites. (Don't worry if the cite you find is to a paid-subscription-only source. No doubt OED can get into that source.) For convenience, here is the OED's list. For each term, OED explains its question here, and you'll want to check that out before researching the term.

Bob posted about this in 'Questions and Answers About Words' back on 3 January. See https://wordcraft.infopop.cc/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/932607094/m/3221093224 So did I, but I deleted my post when I discovered Bob had started his thread before me. I'll leave this thread here, but close it to new posts so that we don't have two threads running concurrently. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day.
