This isn't a word post, but Shu and I were listening to Car Talk today and their quiz was interesting. Shu got it right away. I am wondering about the rest of you: 76=24 Using those four numbers, how can you rearrange them so that each side is equal? You cannot add a plus, minus, times or division sign. Have fun!

Bob, you don't want to try it? Or maybe it's too easy and everyone knows. Or maybe you are all boycotting non-word posts? Oh well.

I don't think I could have gotten it, but Shu got it in about 10 minutes. I was very impressed!

I assume you have to use some other sort of mathematical sign.

You are correct, goofy. You are not, Tinman, because you cannot add anything, like an "s" for 6s or a plus, minus, division or multiplication sign. Just use the four numbers, but you can be creative in using them. I'll post the answer next Monday, if no one has it before then.

Either 7(6)=42 or 6=4+2 where the plus is made from.the two. lines of the seve "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

That would work...if you could include plus, minus, multiplication or division signs, but you can't.

You said I could not add one. I didn't. I made it from things already there. As for my other answer you said nothing at all about brackets. "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Both tinman's and Bob's answers don't add any "plus, minus, multiplication or division signs". So I'm confused. Can you add mathematical signs other than plus, minus, multiplication or division signs? Or can you not use any mathematical signs at all?

Im confused as well. Your answer above said goofy was correct in assuming that "you have to use some other sort of mathematical sign" (other than a plus, minus, times or division sign). Yet, you seem to contradict that by saying you can only use the four numbers.

7^2=49 (you turn the six over)

Brilliant, neveu. I never thought of turning the six over.

neveu got it. Congratulations! To me, and to the contest writers, a parenthesis is a multiplication sign. Nothing was allowed to be added. However, you could turn the 6 into a 9, and then you could use the 2 as a second power (or squared)...since nothing was being added to the equation. Sorry if I was confusing with the directions.

I thought the answer required 42 somewhere in it. How did 49 becme the answer?

You only had to rearrange those 4 numbers so each side of the equals sign was equal.

Where did the "9" cme from?

from the upside down 6 "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

I thought it quite creative, and I was amazed that my husband got it in about 10 minutes.
