How about this: I was thinking of attractive girls in my school, and then I was considering who was the most intelligent of the attractive girls. What word would describe the desire to find the greatest measure of one quality among an already qualified group of one other quality? Please someone help me out here; if you don't have a perfect answer then please share a word or words you believe to resemble what I'm after. Thanks.

I'd call it refining the selection process. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

Iterative selection? "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." Samuel Johnson.

Iterative selection is pretty good. I was hoping for something dead on though--any more ideas, anyone?
