The "eye on the ball" discussion made me think of this phrase. It is commonly used elsewhere, or just around here?

It's definitely used around here. I wondered if its origin was from a quote or a specific game, but I couldn't find anything about its origin. There is a site about clichés which defined it, but the section on origins was blank.

I've not heard it. Build a man a fire and he's warm for a day. Set a man on fire and he's warm for the rest of his life.

It's probably one of those American sportswriter/coach phrases, like "winningest team," which drives me nuts. (edit: should I remove this and start a new thread with it?) (edit, edit: is it dumb to ask questions like this here where freedom of expression is the rule?)

It would be interesting to share other weird sport-related phrases. I don't know why, exactly, but I do like lists. ******* "Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. ~Dalai Lama
