This from an article about Paramount Pictures firing actor Tom Cruise for his strange behavior:
A Tom Cruise is not a dime a dozen, but a Tom Cruise is at risk if he starts acting like the dozens.
The phrase is new to me. In context I can guess at its meaning, but can anyone pin it down with more authority?

A wise old poultry farmer comes to mind. "My hens lays eggs So Big it takes only nine of 'em to make a dozen," he said. But that has nothing whatsoever to do with The dozens.

I haven't heard of it, but I did find this interesting piece about "playing the dozens being an expression used by African Americans. I hadn't heard that one, either.
