A good resource, for the US definitions of trademark and registered trademark, would be the US PTO. Basically, you can use the TM (trademark) symbol any time you wish to assert your right to some bit of intellectual property (IP). A registered trademark must be registered with the US Patent and Trademark Office, and that involves IP lawyers and lots of paperwork.
