In an essay for Common Dreams dot org, Peter Yarrow used the word, "despoliation." Never heard of it. Did Yarrow do a Dubya?

I hadn't heard of it, but it seems to mean the act of plundering or the state of being despoiled. How was it used?

It's a perfectly cromulent word, used since at least 1657.
