What do you think of the two explanations here concerning the origin of the phrase "pulling one's leg"?

Quinion says, "The truth is out there, but it’s keeping itself well hidden." Can we helf find it?

I doubt it. If the combined big brains of Michael Quinion and Evan Morris can't give the answer, I doubt that we poor mortals will succeed. However, I think we can be pretty well sure it's nothing to do with the theory about hanging victims.

I am surprised that the origin of certain phrases or words can't be found. If you recall, another that we've discussed here is "nine ways from Sunday.
