"Sunshine On My Shoulders; John Denver"

Jo - have you seen that there is a new illustrated picture book of this song? Illustrated by my dear friend, Christopher Canyon - it's beautiful! I encourage you to find it at your local library!

Face / place...honey

So long, see you honey
can’t buy me with your money
Tracy, Daisy, they may be crazy
but I’ll never be your girl
so long, see you honey
can’t buy me with your money
you know it’s not worth tryin’
so long, so long, so long

So Long, Abba - my favourite band of all time. A fan since I was a toddler Smile

Aw honey honey (do do do do do do)
You are my candy, girl
and you got me wantin you . . .

I think it was first recorded by the Archies? But I first heard it from the cardboard 45 on the back of the Sugar Smacks cereal box!

honey ... money

Get the Money

Makes no difference who you are;
Get the money.
Makes no difference who you are,
My honey.
Oh, a nickel is a nickel
And a dime is a dime,
A dollar is a dollar most any old time.
Makes no difference who you are;
Get the money!

Money

Money is the meat in the cocoanut,
Money is the milk in the jug;
When you've got lots of money
And you're feeling very funny,
You're as happy as a bug in a rug.

Two songs run together, sung by Carl Sandburg in his 1967 recording, Carl Sandburg sings his American songbag. I'm not positive about the title of the first song, but I am about the second song. It's also recorded in his 1927 book, The American Songbag.

This makes me think of that fabulous and sexy scene in Cabaret with Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey with them whispering (and Bob Fosse's great choreography) . . .

Money money money, money money money,
money money money money money money money . . .

Money makes the world go 'round
the world go 'round, the world go 'round
Money makes the world go 'round
it makes the world go round.

"We're in the Money," lyrics by Al Dubin, music by Harry Warren (from the film Gold Diggers of 1933, 1933)

We're in the money, we're in the money; We've got a lot of what it takes to get along! We're in the money, that sky is sunny, Old Man Depression you are through, you done us wrong.

We never see a headline about breadlines today. And when we see the landlord we can look that guy right in the eye
We're in the money, come on, my honey, Let's lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!

Oh, yes we're in the money, you bet we're in the money, We've got a lot of what it takes to get along! Let's go we're in the money, Look up the skies are sunny, Old Man Depression you are through, you done us wrong.

We never see a headline about breadlines today. And when we see the landlord we can look that guy right in the eye
We're in the money, come on, my honey, Let's lend it, spend it, send it rolling along!

MONEY
this could go on for a while!

"That'll Be the Day"
Tom Petty, Buddy Holly, Jerry Alison

Well, you give me all your lovin' and your turtle dovin',
All your hugs and kisses and your money too,
Well, you know you love me baby, until you tell me, maybe,
That some day, well, I'll be through, well.

Chorus:
That'll be the day, when you say good-bye, yes, that'll be the day, when you
Make me cry. Oh you say you're gonna leave, you know it's a lie 'cause
That'll be the day when I die!

THE DAY.... Die

Bye bye Miss American Pie,
Drove my Chevy to the levee but the levee was dry
Them good ole boys were drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singing "This'll be the day that I die,
This'll be the day that I die."

Bye bye love, I'll catch you later
Got a lead foot down on my accelerator and the rearview mirror torn off
I ain't never lookin' back. And that's a fact.
I've tried all I can imagine
I've begged and pleaded in true lover's fashion
I've got pride, I'm takin' it for a ride
Bye bye, bye bye my baby, bye bye

Who is keen to give me checks
And his checks, I fear
Mean that Tex is here
To stay
But I'm always true to you, darling, in my fashion
Yes I'm always true to you, darling, in my way

I first heard this song on a Cole Porter compilation CD and I fell in love with it. In case you don't know it, here is the link to the whole lyric. Very sassy, very funny.

All around my hat,
I will wear the green willow
And all around my hat,
For a twelve month and a day,
And if anyone should ask me
The reason why I'm wearing it,
It's all for my true love
Who's far, far away.

Ooh! I've thought of another one!

you know what I mean

I saw a cat with a machine in his brain
The man who fed him said
He didn't feel any pain
I'd like to see that man take out that machine
And stick it in his own brain
You know what I mean

I saw a rabbit with its eyes full of tears
The lab that owned her had
Been doing it for years
Why don't we make them pay for every last eye
That couldn't cry its own tears
Do you know what I mean

When I tell you that we'll all be
Looking for changes
Changes in the way we treat our fellow creatures
And we will learn how to grow

"White Rabbit" (Bob will like this one!)
~ Jefferson Airplane

One pill makes you larger
And one pill makes you small,
And the ones that mother gives you
Don't do anything at all.
Go ask Alice
When she's ten feet tall.

And if you go chasing rabbits
And you know you're going to fall,
Tell 'em a hookah smoking caterpillar
Has given you the call.
Call Alice
When she was just small.

How many times have you heard someone say

If I had his money I could do things my way

But little they know that it's so hard to find

One rich man in ten with a satisfied mind

Once I was winning in fortune and fame

Everything I could wish for to get a start in life's game

Then suddenly it happened, I lost every dime

But I'm richer by far with a satisfied mind

Money won't buy back your youth when you're old

A friend when yuou're lonely or a love that's grown cold

The wealthiest person's a pauper at times

Compared to the man with a satisfied mind

When my life is over, my time has run out

My friends and my loved ones will weep, there's no doubt

But one things for certain, when it comes muy time

I'll leave this old world with a satisfied mind

Wow, Jerry! I haven't heard that song in a long time!

money ... youth

My Get-Up-And-Go Has Got Up and Went

How do I know my youth is all spent?
My get-up-and-go has got up and went!
But, in spite of it all, I'm still able to grin,
And think of the places my get-up has been!

Sung by Pete Seeger. The song was apparently written by that most prolific of all song writers, Anonymous.

Youth . .. old age

When I get older, losing my hair, many years from now
Will you still be sending me a valentine,
Birthday greetings, bottle of wine?
If I'd been out til quarter to three would you lock the door?
Will you still need me, will you still feed me, when I'm sixty-four?

I'm sorry that I hurt you, it's something I must live with every day
and all the pain I put you through, I wish that I could take it all away
and be the one who catches all your tears, that's why I need you to hear

I've found a reason for me, to change who I used to be,
a reason to start over new, and the reason is you.

Jingle all the way
Oh, what fun it is to ride
In a one horse open sleigh

THE BELLS
by Edgar Allan Poe
1849

Hear the sledges with the bells-
Silver bells!
What a world of merriment their melody foretells!
How they tinkle, tinkle, tinkle,
In the icy air of night!
While the stars that oversprinkle
All the heavens, seem to twinkle
With a crystalline delight;
Keeping time, time, time,
In a sort of Runic rhyme,
To the tintinnabulation that so musically wells
From the bells, bells, bells, bells,
Bells, bells, bells-
From the jingling and the tinkling of the bells.

Silver Bells ... Day

I spend the night in a chair thinking she'll be there
But she never comes
And then I wake up and wipe the sleep from my eyes
And I rise to face another day
Without her, do do do, do do do do, do do do,

It's just no good anymore when you walk through the door
Of an empty room
And you go inside and set a table for one, it's no fun
When you spend the day
Without her, do do do (...)

Zoo time is she and you time
The mammals are your favourite type, and you want her tonight
Heartbeat, increasing heartbeat
You hear the thunder of stampeding rhinos, elephants and tacky tigers
This town ain't big enough for both of us
And it ain't me who's gonna leave

This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both Of Us - Sparks

Did anyone else catch the late 90s remake with (actually marked 'vs') Faith No More? Much as I love the original, this version really gives it an edge!

PS KHC - Harry Nilsson was brilliant, wasn't he? Really knew how to tug at the old heartstrings - with beautiful lyrics.

Going to the Zoo

written by Tom Paxton (1961?)

We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo
How about you, you, you?
You can come too, too, too
We're goin' to the zoo, zoo, zoo.

That brings back memories. I first heard from my daughter in the early '70s.

You can call on me brother when you need a hand,
We all need somebody to lean on,

Please swallow your pride, if I have things you need to borrow,
For no one can fill, those of your needs that you won't let show.

Charlie Landsborough - Me And The Elephant Song Lyrics

I remember the day we had nothing to do
So we went down to the city zoo
Just to kill an hour or two
Out in the good sunshine

We had so much fun
We were glad that we came
Feed all the animals
And gave each a name
Didn't even mind when it started to rain
We had a real good time

Now that its over and your far away
I miss you more with each passin day
And all my friends sympathize and say
You'll forget in time
Yes you will
Give yourself a little time

But it's already been over a year
Just in case you interested
You might like to hear
How everyone is doing down at the city zoo with out you
Well the monkey forgot you
The hippo forgot you
And so did the kangaroo
But me and the elephant
We still remember you
Me and the elephant will never forget you

Well I wrote to Ann Landers and Dear Abby too,
Sought their advice as to what I should do
They said everything that reminds me of you
Would all have to go
So I burned all of your pictures
Except two or three
The one by my bed
And the one on my TV
And the one that I always carry with me everywhere I go

And today was so nice
And since I was in town
I thought I'd take the opportunity to go down
And see how everyone is down at the city zoo
And what's new
Well the rhino forgot you
The zebra forgot you
The polar bear and the tiger too
But me and the elephant we still remember you
Me and the elephant will never forget you

Makes me think of a rhyme I do with the children:

An elephant goes like this and like that
sway from side to side, like a waddle
He's very very big hands tall, above head
and he's very very fat hands wide
He's got no fingers, wiggle fingers
He's got no toes, wiggle toes
But goodness, gracious! What a nose! make a trunk with arms and "trumpet"

Nellie the elephant packed her trunk,
And said goodbye to the circus (good thing too! Razz)
Off she went with a trumpety-trump,
Trump, trump, trump.

The head of the herd was calling,
Far, far away,
They met one night in the silver light
On the road to Mandalay

Silver Bells
~ Garth Brook (one of many)

City sidewalks, busy sidewalks
Dressed in holiday style
In the air there's a feeling like Christmas
Children laughing, people passing
Meeting smile after smile
And on every street corner you hear

Silver bells, silver bells
It's Christmas time in the city
Ring-a-ling, hear them ring
Soon it will be Christmas day

How could I not post that song?

Silver . . . bells

Carol of the Bells
This has long been one of my favorites to listen to, and to sing (with a good choir).

Hark how the bells,
sweet silver bells,
all seem to say,
throw cares away

Christmas is here,
bringing good cheer,
to young and old,
meek and the bold,

Ding dong ding dong
that is their song
with joyful ring
all caroling

One seems to hear
words of good cheer
from everywhere
filling the air

Oh how they pound,
raising the sound,
o'er hill and dale,
telling their tale,

Gaily they ring
while people sing
songs of good cheer,
Christmas is here,

Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
Merry, merry, merry, merry Christmas,
On on they send,
on without end,
their joyful tone
to every home
Dong Ding dong ding... dong! Bong!

bells...Christmas

I found this online, and it was just too funny to pass up!

The Hannukah Song
Performed by Adam Sandler on 03 Dec 1994 (Roseanne)

Chorus:

Put on your yamukah
Here comes Hannukah
So much funnukah
To celebrate Hannukah

Hannukah is: the festival of lights
Instead of one day of presents
We have eight crazy nights

When you feel like/the only kid in town
Without a Christmas tree
Here's a list of people that are
Jewish like you and me:

David Lee Roth
lights the menorah
So do Kirk Douglas, James Caan
and the late Dinah Shorah

Guess who eats together at
the Carnegie Deli?
Bowser from Sha-Na-Na
And Arthur Fonzarelli!

Paul Newman's half Jewish
and Goldie Hawn's half, too
Put them together,
What a fine looking Jew!

You don't need to Deck the Halls
Or Jingle Bell Rock,
'Cause you can spin the dreidel
With Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock!

[Chorus]

O.J. Simpson [not a Jew]
But guess who is? Hall of Famer Rod Carew [He converted]
We got Ann Landers and her
sister Dear Abby,

Harrison Ford's a quarter Jewish
Not too shabby
Some people think Ebenezer Scrooge is
Well, he's not, but guess who is --
All three Stooges!

[Chorus]

So many Jews are in Show Biz
Tom Cruise isn't but I think his agent is

Tell your friend Veronica
It's time to celebrate Hanukkah
I hope I get a harmonica
On this lovely lovely Hanukkah
So drink your gin and tonica
But don't smoke marijuanica
If you really really wannika
Have a Happy Happy Happy Happy Hanukkah

Happy Hannukah Everybody!

Merry Christmas and Happy Hannukah!

Christmas ... menorah

Eight Candles

lyrics by Malvina Reynolds (1950s?)

Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
Down from the mountains with Liberty's sword
They came like the flame of the Lord
Dance the Horah, light the Menorah
This is the time of joy
The road to freedom we take today
With the Maccabees leading the way.

Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
The tyrant was routed with all of his men
And the temple made holy again

Dance the Horah, light the Menorah
This is the time of joy
The road to freedom we take today
With the Maccabees leading the way.

Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
Eight candles shine for the Maccabees
Chanukah's children will never forget
The glory that shines for us yet

Dance the Horah, light the Menorah
This is the time of joy
The road to freedom we take today
With the Maccabees leading the way.

Really want to be with you
Really want to see you lord
But it takes so long, my lord

Cold Cold Heart
by Hank Williams . . . sung again recently by Norah Jones (and done very well, I might add)

I tried so hard my dear to show that you’re my every dream.
Yet you’re afraid each thing I do is just some evil scheme
A memory from your lonesome past keeps us so far apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

Another love before my time made your heart sad and blue
And so my heart is paying now for things I didn’t do
In anger unkind words are said that make the teardrops start
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind, and melt your cold cold heart

You’ll never know how much it hurts to see you sat and cry
You know you need and want my love yet you’re afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from lies,to try it just ain’t smart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you,the more we drift apart
Why can’t I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

Cold Cold Heart....Teardrops

Lonely Teardrops
~ Michael Jackson

Lonely teardrops, my pillow nerver dries
Lonely teardrops, come home, come home
Just say you will, just say you will, say you will
My heart is cryin?, cryin?

[Hmmm, very soon I imagine Michael will have "lonely teardrops!" Razz]
