As promised, the Galena limericks. Be lenient about the rhyming as I neglected to post how it is pronounced (though I suppose you could have looked it up. Wink)

Also, some of you left instructions. If I messed them up, I am sorry!

If you get confused about the numbers, just count the limericks. I like the polls because quickly you can see which one gets the most votes. Feel free to still discuss them!

Now - VOTE!

Question:
1. I met my true love, Philomena,
In the beautiful city, Galena.
She's really a cutie,
An absolute beauty,
But - she laughs like a laughing hyena!

2. A young man who lives in Galena
Was recently served a subpoena
For getting quite drunk
And spewing his spunk
In a too tipsy teen called Katrina

3. Fat Freddy lives in Galena
With too skinny sister Serena
Freddy's quite rude
He gobbles her food
Leaving her scraps of Farina*

* https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Farina_(food)

4. A boy soprano who came to Galena
Said “In Italia, once I have been a
Superstar of the stage
Until thanks to my age
My voice, she is broke-a mid- scene-a”

5. High up in the sky I have seen a
UFO with a pilot quite green, a
Creature from space
Who has come to this place
To visit us here in Galena.

6. (And just in case it is ga-LAY-na…

In my back I have rather a pain, a
Sort of stabbing again and again, a
Quick look here behind
And what do I find
An assassin who came from Galena.

7. I've heard of a girl from Galena.
Who lives in a patch of Verbena*
I've been told she's a pip
From her head to her hip
But I can't say for sure - never seena.

8. At the Orthodox Church in Galena
I married exotic Irina
But I can't shake the fear
She will just disappear.
I can't find her - has anyone seena?

9. Said a lady who lives in Galena
"I survived Hurrican-e Katrina
But I'm old and can't eat
'Cause I've lost all my teet'
So I nibble all day on farina.

Choices:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
8.
9.

Sorry - I was editing it as you were reading it apparently. The author wanted me to insert a URL, but I can't find that it's possible in the answers part; only in the questions part. So - I added an asterisk.

No problem. I deleted my question when I noticed you had fixed it
A surprisong number of good entries - though most resort to adding random girls' names for the rhyme. Big Grin

What's a random girl, Bob? Perhaps a nod to Hab, who loves Broadway musicals? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xfaaLzgRQI

So many that made me smile - I had to find excuses to downrate one or another. Mostly it's for extra or missing syllables that disrupt the rhythm. I made 2 a cut above because of the alliteration.

Wait no longer. It's one of my favourite metal albums.

Disappointed not to get any vote for 4. Maybe it’s one of those you need to hear

You're right, Bob, saying it in a faux- Italian voice brings out the humour. So, take one of my votes, then we'll have one each. Is that democratic or what? Uh, no it's Marxian! (Groucho)

The only issue for 4 was the rhythm - extra syllable in line 1, for example. Excellent concept, but a fractional-point deduction for execution.

That's why I say you need to hear it... done in the kind of Italian accent you might have heard in a seventies sit-com it works.

I just loved the rhymes in #2. I think sometimes they just sing to you - and sometimes they don't (even though they do to others).

As far as the meter, if they sing to you, you can often make them work, though not always. I agree, Hab, that meter is important.

I'll post a new location later today, once I can remember where I am right now. Senility stinques!
