If I had another C I could make all kinds of CONSTRUCTs, with DE-s and RE-s and -TIONs and COUNTERs and such, if I had another C...

Well, if I can't put things together the only thing to do is take them apart. DESTRUCTION ! With a TIN VOLLEY, no less.

Sorry, that was a typo. It should have been DAMNEDEST ROT, so DEMONSTRATED is right. To use EMPHASIS, it is correct.

It wasn't VICIOUS MESH, I promise.

It must be AUGERING. I hadn't thought there was such a word, but I found it eventually in one online dictionary.

Do they use TONG ARMS to measure it?

Believe it or not, the last time I saw ANGSTROM used was in a crossword puzzle...last Sunday.

Afterword: Augering is also in the unhappy vocabulary of fighter pilots, esp. of the propellor-powered era. When a plane is shot down all too often you can see watch it "augering in" as it spins wing over wing on its way down...

On another subject entirely - I saw a Bearded Lady at the circus, and almost had to KISS HER W...

The first two are easy: SCARECROW and TIN MAN. Is the third COWARDLY LOIN? COWARDLY LINO? I'll take a wild guess and go for COWARDLY LION.

...never knew HYPERBOREAN before but it makes sense, and Onelook.com says it exists:

noun: (Greek mythology) one of a people that the ancient Greeks believed lived in a warm and sunny land north of the source of the north wind

Since I found it by accident I'll have to acknowledge I USED ONE TRIP.

DESTITUTION aside, yes, it was metaphoric, but the "answer that's in the right-hand drawer of my desk" has more to do with not being able to make up its mind whether it's acid or base. (It's both, actually, at one time or another.) And it isn't CAMPHORITE, either.
