Who's sorry now ?
Who's sorry now ?
Who's heart is aching
For breaking each vow ?
Who's sad and blue ?
Who's crying too ?
Just like I cried
Over you
Just like a friend
Right to the end
I tried to warn you somehow
You had your way
Now you must pay
I'm glad that you're sorry now

sorry…sad

I’m Sad and I’m Lonely

I’m sad and I’m lonely, my heart it will break;
My sweetheart loves another, Lord, I wish I wuz dead!
My cheeks once were red as the bud on the rose,
But now they are whiter than the lily that grows.

Young ladies, tak’ wahnin’, tak’ a wahnin’ from me.
Don’t waste your affections on a young man so free.
He’ll hug you, he’ll kiss you, he’ll tell you mo’ lies,
Than the cross-ties on the railroad or the stars in the sky.

I’ll build me a cabin in the mountains so high,
Where the blackbirds can’t see me and hear my sad cry.
I’m troubled, I’m troubled, I’m troubled in mind;
Ef trouble don’ kill me, I’ll live a long time.

The American Songbag, by Carl Sandberg, published 1927, reissued 1990.
He first recorded it in the 1950s. It’s included in the album, Carl Sandburg sings his American Songbag,1967.

Late one night, I heard a knock on my door,
No surprise, it was my landlord.
Notified me I was late with the rent.
What can you do when your last dollar's spent,
You got trouble.
Some kind of trouble.

someone who needs me ... someone to watch over me

There's a saying old, says that love is blind
Still we're often told "Seek and you shall find"
So I'm going to seek a certain lad I've had in mind.
. . .
There's somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone who'll watch over me.
. . .
Won't you tell him please, to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh, how I need
Someone to watch over me...

This is my island in the sun

Oh island in the sun

and when his daddy would visit he'd come along
when they gathered around and started talkin'
that's when Billy would take me walkin'
out through the back yard we'd go walkin'
then he'd look into my eyes

Blackbird has spoken, like the first bird
Praise for the singing, praise for the morning
Praise for the springing fresh from the world

Sweet the rain's new fall, sunlit from heaven
Like the first dewfall, on the first grass
Praise for the sweetness of the wet garden
Sprung in completeness where his feet pass

Mine is the sunlight, mine is the morning
Born of the one light, eden saw play
Praise with elation, praise every morning

It's So Hard
~ John Lennon

You got to live,
You got to love,
You got to be somebody,
You got to shove,
But it's hard,
It's really hard,
Some times I feel like going down,

You go to eat,
You got to drink,
You got to feel something,
You got to worry,
It's so hard,
It's really hard,
Some times I feel like going down,

No, he doesn't. "On Top of Old Smoky", as I've heard it, is sung with a light-hearted lilt. "I'm Sad and I'm Lonely" has a more somber mood. Here's what Sandberg says:

"How many lies will a free young man tell a young lady? As many as the cross-ties on the railroad or as many as the stars in the sky. He will lie and lie. His lies are endless. Thus the cast-off woman speaks of him. She wants a mountain cabin. She wants to be so far away that she won't bother her friends, the blackbirds. She sings it slowly. There is time for deliberation. Yet a phrase now and then, shaded with hate or pity, comes swiftly, almost gutturally and as a threat. The song came to me from a Dallas, Texas, woman who got it from Tennessee folks."

Check "Carl Sandburg sings his American Songbag" out from your local library, if you can, and listen to the song. I think you'll like it.

What can girls learn within its walls worth knowing?
I'll lay a crown (the Princess shall decide it)

It's worth quoting the witty song of men mocking the very notion of a "women's" college. Apologies for the terrible word in the original.
quote:
They intend to send a wire to the moon (to the moon);
And they'll set the Thames on fire very soon (very soon);
Then they'll learn to make silk purses with their rigs (with their rigs)
From the ears of Lady Circe's piggy-wigs (piggy-wigs).
And weasels at their slumbers they trepan (they trepan);
To get sunbeams from cucumbers they've a plan (they've a plan).
They've a firmly rooted notion they can cross the Polar Ocean,
And they'll find Perpetual Motion, if they can (if they can).

As for fashion, they forswear it, so they say (so they say);
And the circle -- they will square it some fine day (some fine day);
Then the little pigs they're teaching for to fly (for to fly);
And the niggers they'll be bleaching, by and by! (by and by!)
Each newly joined aspirant to the clan (to the clan)
Must repudiate the tyrant known as Man (known as Man).
They'll mock at him and flout him, for they do not care about him
And they're "going to do without him" if they can! (if they can!)

I'll probably never see you eye-to-eye again.
This letter's meant to be my last farewell.
But you need to understand, I'm nearly crazy.
You need to know my life has gone to hell.

Write me back and tell me why it ended.
I need some final proof to show my heart.
I'll be somewhere between I love you, and what you're feeling now.
