A long, long time ago...
I can still remember
How that music used to make me smile.
And I knew if I had my chance
That I could make those people dance
And, maybe, they'd be happy for a while.

Once In a While

Once in a while won't you try to give one little thought to me,
Though someone else may be nearer your heart.
Once in a while won't you dream of the moments I shared with you,
Moments before we two drifted apart.

In love's smoldering ember one spark may remain.
If love still can remember the spark may burn again.
I know that I'll be contented with yesterday's memories,
Knowing you think of me once in a while.

Memories light the corner of my mind.
Misty water color memories
Of the way we were.

Scattered pictures of the smiles we left behind,
Smiles we gave to one another
For the way we were.

Look at me,
I'm as helpless as a kitten up a tree
And I feel like I'm clinging to a cloud
I can't understand,
I get misty, holding your hand.

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone
Let's pretend that we're together all alone
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low
And you can tell your friend there with you
He'll have to go

Whisper to me, tell me, do you love me true
Or is he holding you the way I do
Tho' love is blind make up your mind I've got to know
Should I hang up or will you tell him he'll have to go

You can't say the words I love to hear
While he's holding your hand
If you want me answer yes or no
Darling I will understand

Holding your hand....BLIND

Sometimes I drink more than I need
Until the TV's dead and gone...

I may be lonely,
But I'm never alone,
And the night may pass me by
But I'll never cry

Take away, take away my eyes!
Sometimes I'd rather be blind!
Break a heart, break a heart of stone
Open it up but don't you leave it alone

'Cuz that's all I got to give you
Believe me Baby, it ain't been used
My heart's a virgin, it ain't never been tried
And you know I'll never cry
I'll never cry...

You'll never know how much it hurts to see you sit and cry
You know you need and want my love yet you're afraid to try
Why do you run and hide from life to try it just ain't smart
Why cain't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

There was a time when I believed that you belonged to me
But now I know your heart is shackled to a memory
The more I learn to care for you the more we drift apart
Why can't I free your doubtful mind and melt your cold cold heart

I used to fall
In love with all
Those boys who call
On young cuties
But now I find
I'm all inclined
To keep my mind
On my duties
Since I've begun to share
In such a sweet love affair

Though I'm in love, I'm not above
A date with a duke or a caddie
It's just a pose, 'cause my baby knows
That my heart belongs to daddy

When some good scout, invites me out
To dine om some fine finnan haddie
My baby's sure, his love is secure
Cause my heart belongs to daddy

Yes my heart belongs to daddy
So I simply couldn't be bad
Yes I'm gonna marry daddy
Da-a-a-a-a-a-a-a-ad
If you feel romantic laddy
Let me warn you right from the start
That my heart belongs to daddy
And my daddy belongs to my heart

When you gonna wake up and strengthen the things that remain?

Dream A Little Dream Of Me

Stars shining bright above you
Night breezes seem to whisper "I love you"
Birds singing in the sycamore tree
Dream a little Dream of me

Say "Night-ie night" and kiss me
Just hold me tight and tell me you'll miss me
While I'm alone and blue as can be
Dream a little Dream of me

Stars fading but I linger on, dear
Still craving your kiss
I'm longing to linger till dawn, dear
Just saying this

Sweet dreams till sunbeams find you
Sweet dreams that leave all worries behind you
But in your dreams whatever they be
Dream a little Dream of me

Words by Gus Kahn
Music by Wilbur Schwandt and Fabian Andree
1930

This was first recorded in 1931 and has been sung by several people over the years. Mama Cass recorded it in 1968.

I keep hearing you're concerned about my happiness
But all that thought you're giving me is conscience, I guess
If I were walking in your shoes I wouldn't worry none
While you and your friends are worrying 'bout me, I'm having lots of fun
Counting flowers on the wall
That don't bother me at all
Playing solitaire till dawn with a deck of 51
Smoking cigarettes and watching Captain Kangaroo
So don't tell me I've nothing to do.

Evening shadows make me blue
When each weary day is through
How I long to be with you, my happiness

Every day I reminisce
Dreaming of your tender kiss
Always thinking how I miss my happiness

A million years it seems
Have gone by since we shared our dreams
But I’ll hold you again
There’ll be no blue memories then

Whether skies are gray or blue
Any place on earth will do
Just as long as I’m with you, my happiness

Whether skies are gray or blue
Any place on earth will do
Just as long as I’m with you, my happiness

Before the Next Teardrop Falls

If He Brings You Happiness
Then I Wish You All The Best
It's Your Happiness That Matters Most Of All

But If He Ever Breaks Your Heart
If The Teardrops Ever Start
I'll Be There Before The Next Teardrop Falls

Tho' It Hurts To Let You Go
Darling I Want You To Know
That I'll Stand By You If Ever You Should Call
And If I Should Ever Hear
That He Made You Shed A Tear
I'll Be There Before The Next Teardrop Falls

I'll Be There Any Time
You Need Me By Your Side
To Dry Away
Every Teardrop That You Cried

If He Ever Leaves You Blue
Just Remember I Love You
I'll Be There Before The Next Teardrop Falls
Yes I'll Be There
Before The Next Teardrop Falls

More than the greatest love the world has known,
This is the love I give to you alone.
More than the simple words I try to say--
I only live to love you more each day.
More than you'll ever know,
My arms long to hold you so,
My life will be in your keeping,
Waking, sleeping, laughing, weeping...
Longer than always is a long, long time,
But far beyond forever, you'll be mine. [Big Grin]
I know I've never lived before,
And my heart is very sure,
No one else could love you more.

Did you say I've got a lot to learn?
Well, don't think I'm trying not to learn
Since this is the perfect spot to learn
Teach me tonight

Starting with the ABC of it
Right down to the XYZ of it
Help me solve the mystery of it
Teach me tonight

The sky's a blackboard high above you
If a shooting star goes by
I'll use that star to write "I love you"
1000 times across the sky

One thing isn't very clear, my love
Should the teacher stand so near, my love?
Graduation's almost here, my love
Teach me tonight

Love it, palefox. Now let's pick up the beat ... and change the verb "happening" in your song to a noun.

I was sure, I felt secure
Until love took a detour, yeah!
Riding high on the top of the world it happened
Suddenly it just happened
I saw my dreams
Torn apart
When love walked away from my heart
And when you lose a precious love you need to guide you
Something happens inside you,
The happening.

Yesterday , all my troubles seemed so far away ,
Now it looks as though they're here to stay ,
Oh I believe in yesterday .
Suddenly, I'm not half the man I used to be,
There's a shadow hanging over me,
Oh yesterday came suddenly ...
Why she had to go I don't know . She wouldn't say.
I said something wrong , now I long for yesterday ,
Yesterday , love was such an easy game to play ,
Now I need a place to hide away ,
Oh, I believe in yesterday ...

Me and my shadow,

We never knock,
For nobody's there . .

"Negligee" (Tune of "Yesterday" by John Lennon)

Negligee,
I look stupid in this negligee
'Cause my butt sticks out this funny way --
Oh, why'd I buy this negligee?

Suddenly,
I am twice the girl I used to be;
Flab is hanging out all over me --
This negligee's a travesty.

Why it doesn't fit I don't know, I couldn't say;
I did something wrong when I bought this negligee.

Negligee,
I would like to take it back today,
But I threw the damn sales slip away --
I'll have to keep this negligee.
Hmm mm mm mm oo oo oooooo.

If I could turn back time
If I could find a way
I'd take back those words that have hurt you
And you'd stay
If I could reach the stars
I'd give them all to you
Then you'd love me, love me
Like you used to do
If I could turn back

from "If I Could Turn Back Time"

Note: In the spirit of Hic's post above, I was trying to find the stirical version of this, but to no avail. It started with "Look at my firm backside". If anyone can find it, please post it for me!

Shine

Come Rain Or Come Shine

Billie Holiday, Frank Sinatra

quote:
I'm gonna love you
Like nobody's loved you
Come rain or come shine

Does anyone know the year it was first recorded?

Tinman

I've since found out the song was written for the 1946 Broadway musical, St. Louis Woman. The lyrics were by Johnny Mercer and the music by Harold Arlen. Pearl Baily and other female singers were in the show. I don't know which one sang the song. The title I listed, Rain or Shine, was wrong, too. It should be Come Rain or Come Shine.

I see record of it being recorded by Dinah Shore in 1946. Did you know she was rumored to have some African-American ancestry? I didn't, until I read this!

My song . . .

Blue skies smilin' at me
Nothin' but blue skies do I see
Bluebirds singin' a song
Nothin' but bluebirds all day long

Never saw the sun shinin' so bright
Never saw things goin' so right
Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly

Blue days, all of them gone
Nothin' but blue skies from now on
(Blue skies smilin' at me
Nothin' but blue skies do I see)

First, welcome Ghost! Smile Big Grin Wink Cool

I haven't figured out if you are actually a newby, or if this is a preparatory costume for our Halloween party on Saturday! If it is the former, please ignore my PM. Big Grin

Now, this is a fun game, though I will review our very simple rules.

1) Find a word or phrase in the previous lyrics that you want to link to.

2) Post about four lines of your new song, with the name of either the writer or the singer.

3) At the top, in bold letters (or italics, or whatever!), write the word or phrase that the previous poster linked to, and then the word or the phrase that you linked to. That means, the next poster will have "get ready" as the first phrase, and then whatever they decide to link to as the next word or phrase (e.g., it might be "break your heart.)

But dear, you have the wrong version.

The original Happy Days are Here Again is a very bouncy tune (you can hear it at the link) that became Franklin Roosevelt's theme song in the 1932 election campaign. Since then it's pretty much become the anthem of the Demorcratic party. If I don't miss my guess, they play it at every convention, to accompany the crowd's wild enthusiasm as soon as the nominee finishes his acceptance speech.

You can hear it at the link.

    Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So let's sing a song of cheer again
    Happy days are here again

    Altogether shout it now
There's no one who can doubt it now
So let's tell the world about it now
    Happy days are here again

Your cares and troubles are gone
There'll be no more from now on
    From now on ...

    Happy days are here again
The skies above are clear again
So, let's sing a song of cheer again
    Happy days are here again!

Cool Water Sons Of The Pioneers

All day I face the barren waste without the taste of water,
Cool water.
Old Dan and I with throats burned dry and souls that cry for water,
Cool water.

The night are cool and I'm a fool each stars a pool of water,
Cool water.
But with the dawn I'll wake and yawn and carry on to water,
Cool water.

Cool water

Well, take me back down where cool water flows, yeah.
Let me remember things I love,
Stopping at the log where catfish bite,
Walking along the river road at night,
Barefoot girls dancing in the moonlight.
I can hear the bullfrog calling me.
Wonder if my rope's still hanging to the tree.
Love to kick my feet 'way down the shallow water.
Shoefly, dragonfly, get back t'your mother.
Pick up a flat rock, skip it across Green River.
