And simultaneous, too.

Who to link to now, 'nita or the man? Ah, 'tis a puzzlement. I shall cut the Gordian Knot by linking to 'nita's post immediately above.

having a cigarette ... smoke that cigarette

Now I'm a feller with a heart of gold / And the ways of a gentleman I've been told
The kind of guy that wouldn't even harm a flea
But if me and a certain character met / The guy that invented the cigarette
I'd murder that son-of-a-gun in the first degree
It ain't cuz I don't smoke myself / And I don't reckon that it'll harm your health
Smoked all my life and I ain't dead yet
But nicotine slaves are all the same / At a pettin' party or a poker game
Everything gotta stop while they have a cigarette.

Chorus:
Smoke, smoke, smoke that cigarette
Puff, puff, puff and if you smoke yourself to death
Tell St. Peter at the Golden Gate
That you hate to make him wait
But you just gotta have another cigarette.

Now in a game of chance the other night / Old Dame Fortune was a-doin' me right
The kings and the queens just kept on comin' round
And I got a full and I bet 'em high / But my bluff didn't work on a certain guy
He just kept on raisin' and layin' that money down
Now he'd raise me and I'd raise him / I sweated blood, gotta sink or swim
He finally called and didn't even raise the bet
So I said "Aces full Pops how 'bout you?" / He said "I'll tell you in a minute or two
But right now, I gotta have me a cigarette." [chorus]

The other night I had a date / With the cutest little girl in the United States,
A high-bred, uptown, fancy little dame.
She loved me and it seemed to me / That things were 'bout like they oughta be
So hand in hand we strolled down lover's lane.
She was oh so far from a cake of ice / And our smoochin' party was goin' nice
So help me cats I believe I'd be there yet,
But I give her a kiss and a little squeeze / And she said, "Marty, excuse me please
I just gotta have me another cigarette." [chorus]

smoke that cigarette...the cutest little girl

Sweet Rosie O'Grady
~ Words and music by Maude Nugent

Just down around the corner
of the street where I reside,
There lives the cutest little girl
that I have ever spied;
Her name is Rose O'Grady and,
I don't mind telling you,
That she's the sweetest little Rose
the garden ever grew.

Sweet Rosie O'Grady,
My dear little Rose,
She's my steady lady,
Most ev'ryone knows.
And, when we are married,
How happy we'll be;
I love sweet Rosie O'Grady,
And Rosie O'Grady loves me.

of the street where I reside...on the street where you live

I have often walked down this street before
But the pavement always stayed
Beneath my feet before
All at once am I several stories high
Knowing I'm on the street where you live

Are there lilac trees in the heart of town?
Can you hear a lark in any other part of town?
Does enchantment pour out of every door?
No, it's just on the street where you live

And oh, the towering feeling
Just to know somehow you are near
The overpowering feeling
That any second you may suddenly appear

People stop and stare, they don't bother me
For there's nowhere else on earth that I would rather be
Let the time go by, I won't care if I
Can be here on the street where you live

often walked down this street before … often sat on this seat before

from memory: Mad Magazine parody, dealing with overcrowding in the schools

I have often sat on this seat before,
But I never shared it with Joe, Jim and Pete before!
Oh, how sad am I! Four kids occupy
These old desk, and the seat where I sit.

I can can hardly move. Pens are poking me.
There are now twelve arms and legs here that are chocking me,
And to seal my doom, I cant "leave the room".
Things are tough, on this seat where I sit.

And oh, the towering feeling,
Just to know that lunchtime is near;
The overpowering feeling
That any second I may lose a nose or ear.

[can't recall the last verse]

Haven't looked at Mad for several years and I kinda miss it, I think.

To Whom It May Concern: Wink

*looking innocent and efficiently resuming lyric linking activity*

lunchtime is near...ladies who lunch

Pretty women
Fascinating
Sipping coffee
Dancing, pretty women
Pretty women
Are a wonder, pretty women
Sitting in the window or
Standing on the stair
Something in them cheers the air
Pretty women
Silhouetted
Stay within you
Glancing, stay forever
Breathing lightly, pretty women,
Pretty women
Blowing out their candles or
Combing out their hair
Even when they leave
They still are there
They’re there

**sipping coffee
Here’s to the ladies who lunch
Everybody laugh
Lounging in their caftans and
Planning a brunch
On their own behalf
Off to the gym
Then to a fitting,
Claiming they’re fat
And looking grim,
Cause they’ve been sitting
Choosing a hat
I’ll drink to that!

Here’s to the girls who just watch
Aren’t they the best
When they get depressed,
It’s a bottle of scotch
Plus a little jest!
Another chance to disapprove
Another brilliant zinger
Another reason not to move
Another vodka stinger
I’ll drink to that!

Here’s to the girls who play wife
Aren’t they too much!
Keeping house but clutching a copy of Life
Just to keep in touch
The ones who follow the rules
And meet themselves at the schools
Too busy to know that they’re fools
Aren’t they a gem!
I’ll drink to them!
Let’s all drink to...

*pretty women, fascinating
How they make a man sing...

**here’s to the girls on the go,
Everybody tries
Look into their eyes
And you’ll see what they know,
Everybody dies
A toast to that invincible bunch
The dinosaurs surviving the crunch
Let’s hear it for the ladies who lunch
Everybody rise
Everybody rise,

*pretty women at their mirrors
In their gardens
On committees, telephoning
Window shopping table hopping
Pretty women giving parties
Never stopping
Gossip swapping, capsule popping

** everybody rise, everybody rise,
Everybody rise, everybody rise-
Rise-rise-rise...
Pretty women rise!

Ooh - lunch . . . women gossiping . . . .
it's not an exact match to words, but the concept (and it's about a librarian, which is fabbo). . .

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
{Three times}
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep

Professor, her kind of woman doesn't belong on any committee.
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this but she advocates dirty books.
say it isn't so!

Dirty books!

Chaucer!
Rabelais!
Balzac!

And the worst thing
Of course, I shouldn't tell you this but-
I'll tell.
The man lived on my street, let me tell.
Stop! I'll tell.
She made brazen overtures to a man who never had a friend
In this town till she came here.

Oh, yes, that woman made brazen overtures
With a gilt-edged guarantee
She had a golden glint in her eye
And a silver voice with a counterfeit ring
Just melt her down and you'll reveal
A lump of lead as cold as steel
Here, where a woman's heart should be!

He left River City the library building
But he left all the books to her
Chaucer!
Rabelais!
Balzac!

{Refrain}

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Goodnight ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Goodnight ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Goodnight ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
We're going to leave you now
Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep

Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Farewell ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Farewell ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Farewell ladies
Cheep cheep cheep, talk a lot, pick a little more
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
We're going to leave you now
Pick a little, talk a little, pick a little, talk a little
Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep
Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep
Cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep cheep
Pick a little, talk a little, Cheep!

This one is easy.

He left River City ... trouble in River City

Now one fine night they leave the pool hall
Headin' for the dance at the Armory
Libertine men and scarlet women and ragtime
Shameless music that'll grab your son, your daughter
Into the arms of a jungle animal instinct - massteria!
Friends, the idle brain is the devil's playground, trouble!
Oho, we got trouble
Right here in River City.
That game with the fifteen numbered balls is the devil's tool.
Yes, we've got trouble, trouble, trouble
Oh, yes, we got trouble here, we got big, big trouble
With a capital 'T'
And that rhymes with 'P'
And that stands for POOL!

Some temptations simply cannot be resisted:

POOl...ShiPOOpi

Well, a woman who'll kiss on the very first date
Is usually a hussy
And a woman who'll kiss on the second time out
Is anything but fussy
But a woman who'll wait till the third time around
Head in the clouds, feet on the ground
She's the girl he's glad he's found
She's his Shipoopi

Shipoopi! Shipoopi, Shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get!
Shipoopi. Shipoopi, Shipoopi
But you can win her yet.

Walk her once just to raise the curtain
Then you walk around twice and make for certain
Once more in the flower garden
She will never get sore if you beg her pardon

Do re me fa so la si
Do si la sol fa mi re do

Squeeze her once, when she isn't lookin'
If you get a squeeze back that's fancy cookin'
Once more for a pepper-upper
She will never get sore on her way to supper

Do re me fa sol la si
Do si do

Now little ol' Sal was a no-gal
As anyone could see
Lookit her now, she's a go-gal
Who only goes for me

Squeeze her once when she isn't lookin'
If you get a squeeze back, that's fancy cookin'
Once more for a pepper-upper
She will never get sore on her way to supper

Do re me fa sol la si
Do si do

Shipoopi, Shipoopi, Shipoopi
The girl who's hard to get
Shipoopi. Shipoopi, Shipoopi
But you can win her yet

Shipoopi
Thank you CW, Shu, and Meredith Wilson.

hehehe - I really love Music Man . . . but

shipoopi . . . . fancy cookin'

My baby woke me up this mornin'
She said get down that labour exchange,
And if you don't come home with a job son,
You'll get no dinner to-day.
You gotta secure me a weekly workin' wage.
You'll get no more fancy cookin',
You'll get no more apple pie,
You'll just get those plain hot potatoes
To satisfy your appetite.

La la la la la la Potatoes,
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide.
Hot potatoes, yeh,
I want your lovin' every single day.

I said I don't need your fancy cookin' ,
I like the simple things in life,
Just give me those plain hot potatoes
And I'll be well satisfied,
They'll satisfy my appetite.

La la la la la la Potatoes,
Boiled, French fried, any old way that you wanna decide.
Hot potatoes, yeh,
I want your lovin' 60 minutes an hour,
I want your lovin' 24 hours a day,
I want your lovin' 7 days a week.
Yeh, yeh, oh yeh.
I want your love, I need your love,
But all I get is hot potatoes
When I come home late at night
To satisfy my appetite.

fancy cooking . . . potatoes

Do you want it?
Come on and get it.
You gotta get it
While it’s hot.

Do you want it?
Why don’t you act like it?
‘Cause I sure got a lot.
I got potatoes and onions
And string beans and garlic.
If you eat that, it won’t give you the colic.
Do you want it, baby?
Come on and get it.
You gotta get it
While it’s hot.

I don't remember the rest of the song and I don't know who sang it. I heard it in the very late '40s or very early '50s.

One of my dream jobs: personal assistant to Weird Al Yankovic.

If you eat that...Eat it

How come you're always such a fussy young man?
Don't want no Captain Crunch, don't want no Raisin Bran
Well, don't you know that other kids are starving in Japan?
So eat it, just eat it

Don't wanna argue, I don't wanna debate
Don't want to hear about what kind of food you hate
You won't get no dessert 'till you clean off your plate
So eat it

Don't you tell me you're full
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter if it's broiled or fried
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it
Just eat it, eat it, just eat it, eat it, ooh

Your table manners are a cryin' shame
You're playin' with your food, this ain't some kind of game
Now, if you starve to death, you'll just have yourself to blame
So eat it, just eat it

You better listen, better do what you're told
You haven't even touched your tuna casserole
You better chow down or it's gonna get cold
So eat it

I don't care if you're full
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Open up your mouth and feed it
Have some more yogurt, have some more Spam
It doesn't matter if it's fresh or canned
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Don't you make me repeat it
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn't matter what you had for lunch
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it

Eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
If it's gettin' cold, reheat it
Have a big dinner, have a light snack
If you don't like it you can't send it back
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Get yourself an egg and beat it
Have some more chicken, have some more pie
It doesn't matter if it's boiled or fried
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it
Don't you make me repeat it
Have a banana, have a whole bunch
It doesn't matter what you had for lunch
Just eat it, eat it, eat it, eat it

Just when I thought I'd never have a day of good luck Wink

lovely...loverly

All I want is a room somewhere,
Far away from the cold night air.
With one enormous chair,
Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?
Lots of choc'lates for me to eat,
Lots of coal makin' lots of 'eat.
Warm face, warm 'ands, warm feet,
Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?
Oh, so loverly sittin' abso-bloomin'-lutely still.
I would never budge 'till spring
Crept over me windowsill.
Someone's 'ead restin' on my knee,
Warm an' tender as 'e can be
Who takes good care of me,
Oh, wouldn't it be loverly?
Loverly, loverly, loverly, loverly

Wouldn't It Be Loverly?

Loverly song, 'nita.

crept over me (windowsill) ... watch over me

There's a somebody I'm longing to see
I hope that he turns out to be
Someone to watch over me

I'm a little lamb who's lost in a wood
I know I could always be good
To one who'll watch over me

Won't you tell him please to put on some speed
Follow my lead, oh how I need
Someone to watch over me

Shu, few things make me cry anymore, but "Someone to Watch Over Me" always does.

lost in a wood...little boy lost

Little boy lost,
In search of little boy found
You go on wondering, wandering
Stumbling, tumbling 'round...'round....
When will you find
What's on the tip of your mind?
Why are you blind
To all you ever were,
Never were,
Really are,
Nearly are?
Little boy false
In search of little boy true
Will you be ever done
Traveling
Always unraveling
You...you?
Running away
Could lead you farther astray
And as for fishing in streams,
For pieces of dreams,
Those pieces will never fit
What is the sense of it?
Little boy blue,
Don't let your little sheep roam
It's time, come blow your horn
Meet the morn,
Look and see,
Can you be far from home?

The earth says hello
You twinkle above us

Our early morning singing song

Nibby nabby noopy
La la la lo lo
Sabba sibby sabba
Nooby abba nabba

Wink Tooby ooby walla ... walla walla bing bang
I told the witch doctor I was in love with you
I told the witch doctor you didn't love me too
And then the witch doctor, he told me what to do
    He said that ....

    [chorus:]
    Ooo eee, ooo ah ah
Ting, tang, walla walla bing bang
    Ooo eee, ooo ah ah
Ting tang walla walla bing bang.

I told the witch doctor you didn't love me true
I told the witch doctor you didn't love me nice
And then the witch doctor, he game me this advice
    He said to ... [chorus]

Now, you've been keeping love from me
Just like you were a miser
    And I'll admit I wasn't very smart
So I went out and found myself
A guy that's so much wiser
And he taught me the way to win your heart

My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to say
My friend the witch doctor, he taught me what to do
I know that you'll be mine when I say this to you

So be my guest, you got nothin' to lose
Won't ya let me take you on a sea cruise
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby
Oo-ee, oo-ee baby
Won't ya let me take you on a sea cruise

Feel like jumpin' baby won't ya join me please
I don't like beggin' but I'm on bended knee

I got to get t'rockin, get my hat off the rack
I got to boogie woogie like a knife in the back
So be my guest, you got nothin' to lose

boogie woogie ... boogie woogie bugle boy

He was a famous trumpet man from old Chicago way
He had a boogie style that no one else could play
He was the top man at his craft
But then his number came up and he was gone with the draft
He's in the army now, a-blowin' reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

They made him blow a bugle for his Uncle Sam
It really brought him down, because he couldn't jam
The Captain seemed to understand
Because the next day the Cap' went out and drafted a band
And now the company jumps when he plays reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

A-toot a-toot, a-toot diddle-ee-ada-toot
He blows it eight to the bar - in boogie rhythm
He can't blow a note unless the bass and guitar
Is playin' with 'im
He makes the company jump when he plays reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

He was the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B
And when he plays boogie-woogie bugle
He's as busy as a bzz bee
And when he plays he makes the company jump eight to the bar
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

Toot toot toot, toot diddle-ee-ada-toot-diddle-ee-ada, toot toot
He blows it eight to the bar
He can't blow a note
If the bass and guitar isn't with 'im
A-and the company jumps when he plays reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

He puts the boys to sleep with boogie every night
And wakes them up the same way in the early bright
They clap their hands and stamp their feet
Because they know how he plays
When someone gives him a beat
He really breaks it up when he plays reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B

Da-da, da-do-da-da
Da-da, da-do-da-da
Da-da, da-do-da-da
Da-da, da-do-da
A-and the company jumps when he plays reveille
He's the boogie-woogie bugle boy of Company B.

Here's a very different take on the army buglar. In the version I'd known, "amputate his" was replaced by "dig his grave at"

the company jumps when he plays reveille ... amputate his reveille

Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning!
Oh, how I'd love to remain in bed!
For the hardest blow of all is to hear the bugler call,
"You've got to get up. You've got to get up.
You've got to get up this morning."
Someday I'm going to murder the bugler.
Someday they're going to find him dead.
I'll amputate his reveille and stomp upon it heavily
And spend ...
... the rest of my life in bed.

amputate his reveille . . . up in the morning . . . bed . . . out of bed

Tumble out of bed and stumble to the kitchen
Pour myself a cup of ambition

And yawn
and stretch
and try to come to life.
Jump in the shower
and the blood starts pumping

Out on the street
the traffic starts jumping
With folks like me on the job from nine to five.

Working nine to five
what a way to make living
Barely getting by
it's all taking and no giving.
They just use your mind
and they never give you credit
It's enough to drive you crazy
if you let it.

Nine to five
for service and devotion
You would think that I would deserve a fair promotion
Want to move ahead
but the boss won't seem to let me
I swear sometimes
that man is out to get me.

"a cup of ambition" -- terrific euphemism!

And I wish someone who knows these things would start a thread about "reveille."

drive you crazy...drive you home

Who's gonna tell you when
It's too late
Who's gonna tell you things
Aren't so great
You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

Who's gonna pick you up
When you fall
Who's gonna hang it up
When you call
Who's gonna pay attention
To your dreams
Who's gonna plug their ears
When you scream

You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

Who's gonna hold you down
When you shake
Who's gonna come around
When you break

You can't go on
Thinking nothing's wrong
Who's gonna drive you home tonight

drive you home . . . who's gonna . . . who's sorry now

Who’s sorry now, who’s sorry now
Whose heart is achin’ for breakin’ each vow
Who’s sad and blue, who’s cryin’ too
Just like I cried over you.

Right to the end, just like a friend
I tried to warn you somehow
You had your way, now you must pay
I’m glad that you’re sorry now.

Right to the end just like a friend
I tried to warn you somehow
You had your way, now you must pay
I’m glad that you’re sorry now.

Who's Sorry Now Words and music by Bert Kalmar, Ted Snyder and Harry Ruby. Sung by Connie Francis. (the link even has a midi file!)

I just couldn't bring myself to post the real thing, so I've chosen the parody instead. (Do forgive me, Billy Ray.)

heart is achin’ for breakin’ each vow...Achy Breaky

You can torture me with Donnie and Marie
You can play some Barry Manilow
Or you can play some shlock, like New Kids on the Block
Or any Villiage People song you know
Or play Vanilla Ice, hey you can play him twice
And you can play the BeeGees any day
But Mr. DJ please, I'm begging on my knees
I just can't take no more of Billy Ray

Don't play that song, that Achy Breaky song
The most anoying song I know
And if you play that song, that Achy Breaky song
I might blow up my radio
Hooooo

You can clear the room by playing Debbie Boone
Or crank your Abba records until dawn
Oh, I could even hear Slim Whitman or Zamfir
Don't mind a Yoko Ono marathon
Or play some Tiffany on 8-track or CD
Or scratch your fingernails across the board
Or tie me to a chair, and kick me down the stairs
Just please don't play that stupid song no more

Don't play that song, that Achy Breaky song
You know I hate that song a bunch
And if you play that song, that Achy Breaky song
It might just make me lose my lunch
Hoooooo

Don't play that song, that Achy Breaky song
I think it's driving me insane
Oh, please don't play that song, that irritating song
I'd rather have a pitchfork through my brain

running through my brain...running 'round my brain

There's a little black spot on the sun today
That's my soul up there
It's the same old thing as yesterday
That's my soul up there
There's a black hat caught in a high treetop
That's my soul up there
There's a flagpole rag and the wind won't stop
That's my soul up there

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I'm always hoping that you'll end this reign
But it's my destiny to be the king of pain...

There's a fossil that's trapped in a high cliff wall
There's a dead salmon frozen in a waterfall
There's a blue whale beached by a springtime's ebb
There's a butterfly trapped in a spider's web

There's a king on a throne with his eyes torn out
There's a blind man looking for a shadow of doubt
There's a rich man sleeping on a golden bed
There's a skeleton choking on a crust of bread

There's a red fox torn by a huntsman's pack
There's a black-winged gull with a broken back
There's a little black spot on the sun today.
It's the same old thing as yesterday,
That's my soul up there...

I have stood here before inside the pouring rain
With the world turning circles running 'round my brain
I guess I always thought that you could end this reign,

running 'round my brain...spider's web

I found this cute little ditty...I haven't heard it, but it sounds fun.

Spider's Web
~Charlotte Diamond

Take the silver thread of a spider’s web
And spin, spin, spin
Silver wings to fly and sing
Upon the wind.

High above the trees, across the seas
Through the sky
To the rainbow’s bend where stories never end
And dreams never die.

spider’s web...itsy bitsy spider

Baby sneezes
Mommy pleases
Daddy breezes in
So good on paper
So romantic
But so bewildering

I know nothing stays the same
But if you're willing to play the game
It's coming around again
So don't mind if I fall apart
There's more room in a broken heart

You pay the grocer
Fix the toaster
Kiss the host good-bye
Then you break a window
Burn the soufflé
Scream a lullaby

I know nothing stays the same
But if you're willing to play the game
It could be coming around again
So don't mind if I fall apart
There's more room in a broken heart

And I believe in love
But what else can I do
I'm so in love with you

I know nothing stays the same
But if you're willing to play the game
It's coming around again

The itsy bitsy spider climbed up the water spout
Down came the rain and washed the spider out
Out came the sun and dried up all the rain
And the itsy bitsy spider climbed up the spout again

I believe in love
And who knows where or when
But it's comin' around again

I know nothin' stays the same
But if you're willing to play the game
It's comin' around again

it's coming around again . . .around and round and round

The Love Shack is a little old place
where we can get together
Love Shack baby, Love Shack bay-bee.
Love baby, that's where it's at,
Ooo love baby, that's where it's at

Sign says.. Woo... stay away fools,
'cause love rules at the Lo-o-ove Shack!
Well it's set way back in the middle of a field,
Just a funky old shack and I gotta get back

Glitter on the mattress
Glitter on the highway
Glitter on the front porch
Glitter on the hallway

The Love Shack is a little old place
where we can get together
Love Shack bay-bee! Love Shack baby!
Love Shack, that's where it's at!
Huggin' and a kissin', dancin' and a lovin',
wearin' next to nothing
Cause it's hot as an oven
The whole shack shimmies!
The whole shack shimmies when everybody's
Movin' around and around and around and around!
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby!
Folks linin' up outside just to get down
Everybody's movin', everybody's groovin' baby
Funky little shack! Funk-y little shack!

Hop in my Chrysler,
it's as big as a whale
and it's about to set sail!
I got me a car, it seats about twenty
So c'mon and bring your jukebox money.

CW, love that crazy song!

love shack..little brown shack

They passed an ordinance in the town
Said we'd have to tear it down
That little brown shack out back, so dear to me
Though the health department said
Its day was over and dead
It will stand forever in my memory

Don't let 'em tear that little brown building down
Don't let 'em tear that little brown building down
Don't let 'em tear that little brown building down
For there's not another like it in the country or the town

It was not too long ago
That I went tripping through the snow
Out to that house, behind my old hound dog
Where I'd sit me down to rest
Like a snowbird on her nest
And read the Sears and Roebuck catalog

I would hum a happy tune
Peeping through the quarter moon
Just like my pappy's kin had done before
It was in that quiet pot
Daily cares could be forgot
And it gave the same relief to rich and poor

It was not a castle fair
I could build my future there
Build castles to the yellow jackets' drone
I could orbit 'round the sun
Fight with General Washington
Or be a king upon his own throne

It wasn't fancy built at all
Had newspapers on the wall
It was air conditioned in the wintertime
It was just a humble hut
But its door was never shut
And a man could get inside without a dime

Ode To The Little Brown Shack

daily cares . . . cares and woes

Pack up all my cares and woes
Feeling low here I go
Bye bye blackbird

Where somebody waits for me
Sugar sweet so is she
Bye bye blackbird

No one seems to love or understand me
And all the hard luck stories they keep handing me
Where somebody shines the light
I'll be coming on home tonight
Bye bye blackbird

I'm glad I found this first...one of my favorite songs follows.

blackbird...blackbird

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these sunken eyes and learn to see
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to be free.

Blackbird fly blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Blackbird fly blackbird fly
Into the light of the dark black night.

Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise
You were only waiting for this moment to arise.

blackbird . . . fly

Spend all your time waiting for that second chance
For the break that will make it ok
There's always some reason to feel not good enough
And it's hard at the end of the day
I need some distraction oh beautiful release
Memories seep from my veins
They may be empty and weightless and maybe
I'll find some peace tonight

In the arms of an Angel fly away from here
From this dark, cold hotel room, and the endlessness that you fear
You are pulled from the wreckage of your silent reverie
You're in the arms of an Angel; may you find some comfort here

In the Arms of an Angel ~ Sarah McLachlan

Two opposite attitudes:
it's hard at the end of the day … I live for the end of the day

Up every morning just to keep a job / I gotta fight my way through the hustling mob.
Sounds of the city pounding in my brain / While another day goes down the drain.
But its a five o'clock world when the whistle blows / No one owns a piece of my time
And theres a five o'clock me inside my clothes / Thinking that the world looks fine.

Trade my time for the pay I get / Living on money that I ain't made yet
I've been going trying to make my way / While I live for the end of the day
'Cause its a five o'clock world when the whistle blows / No one owns a piece of my time,
And there's a long-haired girl who waits, I know / To ease my troubled mind, yeah

In the shelter of her arms everything's OK / She talks and the world goes slippin away
And I know the reason I can still go on / When every other reason is gone.
In my five o'clock world she waits for me / Nothing else matters at all
'Cause every time my baby smiles at me / I know thats its all worthwhile

in the shelter of her arms...in the shelter of your arms

In this cold world
No matter where I go
The crowds are all the same
To them I'm just
A pebble in the sand
A face without a name
Nobody gives a hang
For what I say or do
But you

And in the shelter of your arms
I find peace and comfort and care
For I am wanted there

In this cold world
You struggle to survive
And sometimes you can fall
You'd think someone
Would lend a helping hand
They'd sooner see you crawl
But just when life itself
Seems more than I can bear
You're there

And in the shelter of your arms
I find strength and safety and then
I rise and start again

Just give me one good reason
To go on living
To keep on trying
For what, I ask you for what
If not for you
And all your love
To see me through

But just when life itself
Seems more than I can bear
You're there
And in the shelter of your arms
I find strength and safety and then
I rise and start again

The Shelter of Your Arms

Thank you for the chance to link to this lovely song.

A face without a name ... A beautiful face without a name

It must have been cold there in my shadow,
To never have sunlight on your face.
You were content to let me shine, that's your way.
You always walked a step behind.

So I was the one with all the glory,
While you were the one with all the strength.
A beautiful face without a name for so long.
A beautiful smile to hide the pain.

Did you ever know that you're my hero,
And everything I would like to be?
I can fly higher than an eagle,
For you are the wind beneath my wings.

Bette Midler, Wind Beneath My Wings

You're welcome. And thank you.

beautiful face...beautiful boy

Close your eyes, Have no fear
The monster's gone, he's on the run
And your daddy's here

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy

Before you go to sleep
Say a little prayer
Every day in every way,
It's getting better and better

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy

Out on the ocean, sailing away
I can hardly wait
To see you come of age
But I guess we'll just have to be patient
'Cause it's a long way to go, a hard row to hoe
Yes it's a long way to go, but in the meantime,

Before you cross the street
Take my hand
Life is just what happens to you
While you're busy making other plans

Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy
Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, beautiful boy

Beautiful Boy

close your eyes ... close your eyes

Close your eyes
, close the door,
You don't have to worry any more.
I'll be your baby tonight.

Shut the light, shut the shade,
You don't have to be afraid.
I'll be your baby tonight.

Well, that mockingbird's gonna sail away,
We're gonna forget it.
That big, fat moon is gonna shine like a spoon,
But we're gonna let it,
You won't regret it.

Kick your shoes off, do not fear,
Bring that bottle over here.
I'll be your baby tonight.

fat moon...paper moon

I never feel a thing is real
When I'm away from you
Out of your embrace
The world's a temporary parking place

Say, its only a paper moon
Sailing over a cardboard sea
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

Yes, it's only a canvas sky
Hanging over a muslin tree
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

Without your love
It's a honky-tonk parade
Without your love
It's a melody played in a penny arcade

It's a Barnum and Bailey world
Just as phony as it can be
But it wouldn't be make-believe
If you believed in me

paper moon . . . love

Taking A Chance On Love
Sung by Ethel Waters in 1940 and many others since then.

Here I go again
I’m hearing trumpets blow again
All aglow again
Taking a chance on love

Here I slide again
About to take that ride again
Starry eyed again
Taking a chance on love

I thought the cards were a frame-up
That I never would try
But now I'm taking the game up
And the ace of hearts is high

Things are mending now
I see a rainbow blending now
We'll have our happy ending now
Taking a chance on love

Here I slip again
I’m gonna take that tip again
Got my grip again
Taking a chance on love

Now I prove again
That I can make life move again
In the groove again
Taking a chance on love

I’m walking round with a horseshoe
And in clover I lie
Why Mr. rabbit of course you
Better kiss your foot good-bye

On the ball again
I'm riding for a fall again
I'm gonna give my all again
Taking a chance on love

I’m feeling fine again
That’s why I’ll rise and shine again
I lost my mind again
Taking a chance on love

Here I think again
I’m getting in the pink again
On the brink again
Taking a chance on love

This game I’m taking a crack at
Sure needs good luck with me
So I’m taking a whack at
Any black cat that I see

Boy, I’m booked again
I’m in the swim and hooked again
This goose of mine is cooked again
Taking a chance on love

Sung by Ethel Waters. From the 1943 movie version of Cabin In the Sky. Music by Vernon Duke. Lyrics by John Latouche with the collaboration of Ted Fetter. Originally a Broadway musical, opening on October 25, 1940.

love . . . goose is cooked

Wake up little suzie, wake up, wake up little suzie, wake up
We both fell sound asleep, wake up little suzie and weep
The movie’s over, it’s four o’clock and we’re in trouble deep

Chorus:
Wake up little suzie, wake up little suzie
Well, what’re we gonna tell your mama, what’re we gonna tell your papa
What’re gonna tell our friends when they say ’ooh la la’
Wake up little suzie, wake up little suzie

Well, I told your mama that you’d be in by ten
Well, suzie baby, looks like we goofed again

Wake up little suzie, wake up little suzie, we gotta go home

Wake up little suzie, wake up, wake up little suzie, wake up
The movie wasn’t so hot, it didn’t have much of a plot
We fell asleep, our goose is cooked, our reputation is shot

wake up, little Suzie ... wake up where the clouds ...
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Way up high
    There's a land that I've heard of
    Once in a lullaby
    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Skies are blue
And the dreams that you dare to
    Dream really do come true.

Some day I'll wish upon a star
And wake up where the clouds are far behind me,
Where troubles melt like lemon drops
    Away above the chimney tops
    That's where you'll find me.

    Somewhere over the rainbow
    Blue birds fly.
    Birds fly over the rainbow
Why then, oh why can't I?
    If happy little bluebirds fly
    Beyond the rainbow
    Why oh why can't I?

Wake up, the wicked witch is dead.

ring the bells out...bells on the hill

There were bells on the hill
But I never heard them ringing,
No, I never heard them at all
Till there was you.

There were birds in the sky
But I never saw them winging
No, I never saw them at all
Till there was you.

And there was music,
And there were wonderful roses,
They tell me,
In sweet, fragrant meadows of dawn and dew.

There was love all around
But I never heard it singing
No, I never heard it at all
Till there was you.

Bad Day
~Daniel Powter

Where is the moment we need at the most
You kick up the leaves and the magic is lost
They tell me your blue skies fade to grey
They tell me your passion's gone away
And I don't need no carryin' on

You stand in the line just to hit a new low
You're faking a smile with the coffee to go
You tell me your life's been way off line
You're falling to pieces everytime
And I don't need no carryin' on

Come on dear, lets not be blue! Big Grin
Instead of blue skies fade to grey lets have … nothing but blue skies.
Blue skies, sung by Bing Crosby

I was blue, just as blue as I could be
Ev'ry day was a cloudy day for me
Then good luck came a-knocking at my door
Skies were gray but they're not gray anymore

Blue skies … smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies … do I see
    Bluebirds … singing a song
Nothing but bluebirds … all day long

Never saw the sun shining so bright
Never saw things going so right
    Noticing the days hurrying by
When you're in love, my how they fly.

Blue days … all of them gone
Nothing but blue skies … from now on.
